I think the CAT NO is SHELL 04 being that it is the forth in the remix
series. An excellent mix, bizarrely keeping nearly the entire tracks and
adding drum and bass overtones and weird cat like noises! Great for
mixing with unlike the original version... The B-Side Tortoises 'Wait' is
ace too.

The 12" is called 'Its The Music'
The track title is Asbestos Lead Asbestos (Plug Mix)
Again another great Plug mix beginning in a fucked up Wagon Christ
style and then hitting with funky breaks and trademark oscillating deep
bass. Top!

Don't know the CAT for this. Not one of his best mixes. Drops sparse
drum and bass over the main vocal, and not a lot else. A bit slack but
seeing as my LAMB 12" only cost 2.50 I can't complain. Andrea Parkers mix
is pretty good.

Again dunno, but a better mix than Lamb but not as good as Tortoise or
MBM. Slow and breakbeaty with lots of atmospheric bits. The beats develop
nicely into something phairly phat and the vocal is used at half speed...
Tortoise remix side two to tedious effect...

Again no CAT, but track title is Atomic Moog (Wagon Christ Mix). Sounds
like it should be a good one...

No CAT, but the tracks is called Sharp AZ and appears on Headz B (I think!)

CAT is something like BS 1 or BREAK 1 or something. Track is called
Dark Matter and is pretty much just beats. Quite nice but not as amazing
as anything on Drum and Bass for Papa...

A bit late on this one, but I've been busy...
Gary Moscheletes - Shaped To Make Your Life Easier
A track by track guide to Mike's new LP.
Mamborama - Sampled xylophonics are joined by some congos and the
trademark Slaz lo fi beatbox part way through. Hip hop tempo.Nice opener,
with nothing too grating to annoy the listener early on!
Play It Again, Sonny - Begins with piano sample which is halved in speed
later on to create different melodies. Some funky bass and beat dropped in
after the piano intro and some nice little drum breakdowns thorughout.
This is at house speed and would mix well over the top of a lot of house
stuff (if not for the poor volume of the pressing and the slightly weak
beat!). Trumpet riff appears around half way to funk things up to the next
level. Sounds somewhat like the housey moments from the new Fila
Brazillia LP. A highlight...
Mamblues - Nice and short. More xylophonics with a ascending bassline
overlaid. Again, good drum/xylo breakdowns sounding somewhat like a
tracks off Sabres of Paradises 'Haunted Dancehall' (the name escapes me).
Squidgy acid style (not 303 - the acid sound from Acid Pope on
Makesaracket) and synth pads appear. Again the beat is a bit lo-fi and
could pack a bit more of a punch...
Plot Thickener - Yet again more easy listening xylos/pianos (I think
you've got the idea of the theme of this LP!) and a beat recognisable
from a former Mike P production (I think!). Worth using again though.
Good sax samples and drum solos thorughout!
Suprise Horn 2 - Mental trumpet and hammond organ loop underpinned by a
speedy drum and bass ish rhythm. Another ripped off riff from the same
tune appears, they mingle in and out chatting and then leave.
Funk Yo Ass - A long one. Money Mark style funky rhodesy chords with lots
of synth soloing over the top (literally!) Goes a bit overboard a la Lisa
Carbon Trio and then finally goes away after long overstaying its welcome.
Walk It Like This - Crunchy downtempo beats this time with a guitar/piano
loop!! Funky low bassline keeps things moving as do random bleepings. Add
scrapy beatz from Tango N Vectif (Metal Thing.../Beatnik style) over the
top. Another highlight...
Garys Groove - Short drum workout. Alright but a bit pointless. Thank God
its short.
12345678 - Even more guitar/keys samples this time with women shouting
the title as a breakdown and over the top of the rest of the track. Also
adds 'Yeah...wooo's' sort of a la Tricky Disco!
Johnny Hates Jazz - Again the acid noise makes an appearance. Nice jazzy
drums and more hammond. Overall in a 'Cricket Theme' stylee. Horn breaks
part way thorogh are a nice addition. Lo fi drums return from exile on
the Auteurs Vs U-Ziq LP - welcome back! Gary ruins it in the end though
with loud out of tune synthy brass near the end. Doh!
Goodbye Jazz People - Garys outro. Blokes voice pitched down. Its a bit
Theo P.Wilderbeast. Mentions Girls Butts and Bradley Stryder in the same
sentence! Loses accent a bit, then gets it back. Good tune, and fairly
amusing. The tune I have heard before somewhere. You get this feeling a
lot with this LP.
Free 7"
Garys House - Lots of synth stab/orchestra hit sounds. Features 'Lets Get
Down' sample previously used by Plug on Brave Lick. Four to the floor
beatz a few solos, etc etc.
Gary Goes Wild - Filler time. Mad looped riff and more four to the floor
house beats. Bloke repeating the word 'Gary' over and over again. Sounds
like it was taken from the speech on Goodbye Jazz People. Quickly
irritates. Carl Craig style pitch bent synth sounds appear along with
freaky percussion. Repeat to fade...
All in all, the Mike P resurgence continues. Not as good as
'Groovybeat' (in my opinion his best proper LP since Tango or Auteurs VS
U-Ziq) but still packs some good trax. As mentioned a few annoying ones,
but does actually make for a good listening album all the way though. A
bit of Mike P now and again can't be bad. When he was releasing three LPs
a week or whatever it got pretty dull but his quality control seems to be
back up a bit. Basically recommended if you've got the other stuff and
want more of the same, but if its your intended first Mike P buy then get
Tango/Auteurs/Groovybeat first...
Global Goon - Global Goon (vinyl version)
The sleeve says 'A Exaltation of Heath Music' which indeed it seems to
be. Pretty revitalising stuff. Begins pretty badly though with St Martin
which features 'bloke' singing in and out of tune over organ chords and a
drum box reminiscent of Orbitals 'Duck Feet'. 'Bloke' seems to be reading
from a St Martins college prospectus?! Twisted. LP Picks up with 'Skip
Glider', a jolly ditty of which the main riff is a bit like slowed down
stuff from the Richard D.James Album. Definately a high point. 'The Owl,
Pussycat' uses xylophones and vibes, a cut up hip-hop beat and later some
string stab type sounds to create something pretty strange but nice. More
organ chords a la Logon Rock Witch. Intruments stop at one point and
echoed beat continues until the instruments return for the finale.
'Signpost' uses a great dirty distorto loop which is excellent. More
downtempo beats. Everything is removed for a running water silent bit
which sounds like 'bloke' singing in the shower! Very reminiscent of the
echoey bits in St Ettienes 'Avenue'. The raucousness returns for the
ending. 'Pagan Relict' clangs along abrasively and features some lovely
up and down scaley bitz. More wibblysynths(TM) and repeat to fade...
Side 2 hits with 'Moon Pool' which has yet more robotic clangyness,
xylophones (the current 'in' sound) and 'bloke' singing 'smile', 'while'
or perhaps more understandably 'why?'. His singing seems to have inproved
though. Next up is 'Roller' - a lovely listenable thing which hippity
hops around with melodys pinched a bit from Kraftwerks 'The Model'.
'Clapping Song' features no discernable clapping, but does have fast
jungle drumming snippets which lead into a nice downtempo beat. There are
also weird flute sounds, and a breathy child like moaning sample (!
Remeber those weird noises on Ventolin EP!). Distorted bass gives it
loads! 'Metal Buffalo' is more of the same with an addictive flute riff.
'Der Kipper' on the other hand takes looped muffled incomprehensables and
does much the same again.
As mentioned this LP is great for listening and makes a good comapion
to the Gary Moscheletes LP. Gary funks it up, Goon cools it down. Again a
bit of a Fila Brazillia sound in places but less of a funk/acid jazz
influence and simpler groove like tracks... Reccomendened, but you've got
to be in the right mood.
Ba-da-bing!
