Overheard on another list: MTV: ON THE FLIP SIDE MTV is overhauling its playlist, giving more exposure to techno, dance and "mainstream" performers while de-emphasizing alternative rock, hip-hop and "hard-core" rap, the music channel said Tuesday. MTV programming chief Andy Schuon told today's (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times, "Our shift allows us, while we wait for the next big thing, to widen our net to be able to catch more things as we look ahead to '97 as a time of exploration in music." MTV Networks chairman Tom Freston, in a Wall Street Journal interview, remarked that the move was made in response to a period of flat record sales. "We want to do something to shake things up," he said.

If MTV does decide to start showing more techno videos, I can only help but think that they are following the lead of MuchMusic, which I've noticed plays quite a few of the more popular techno/ambient bands' videos quite frequently (they even chart on the top 20 countdown). I've also watched programs on MuchMusic similar to AMP on Mtv, only 90 minutes long.
