Just got back from a gig in Nottingham as part of the arts festival we've
got going at the moment. Supposed to be headlined by Squarepusher, but
unfortunately his DAT's chewed up, so no Squarepusher.
Started with a local band called Woob, very dubby ambient stuff with Steve
Hillage style guitar. Think of Steve Hillage's performance at the Rainbow
Dome ( Festival for Mind, Body & Spirit - London 1979), with 90's friendly
beats. Excellent music, but only incidental compared to the percussionist
who came on at the end. Accompanied by what looked like a DAT, and a drum
machine, this man could do live with his hands the stuff drum machines can
but dream of. He did an hour set, of very nice jungle, reminded me of
squarepusher, but the drumming was just out of this world. the high of the
night was a long solo piece that had people either dancing manicly, or
standing still staring at this man's hands. His name is Talvin Singh (I'm
not sure if that's correct spelling), I have no idea if he has any sort of
record contract, does anyone here know anything about him?
Cheers,
Leaf.
