What? I don't know if you went to the show, but the first DJ was Spooky That Sublimal Kid and the DJ after that was Los Angeles own Jason Bentley. Jason Bentley, there's a name that's been batted around these parts for a while... He had a radio show on KXLU call 'the Illicit Groove', back in 89-90. Then he was called DJ Sonic. In later years he moved to one of best (IMHO) radio stations in LA, KCRW. His show, Metropolis, has introduced me, and many other to lots of great music. Unfortunately I no longer listen to Jason's show. This may get my ass flamed but I've had this feeling for sometime that he's sold out. Jason and his partner, fellow KCRW DJ, Bruno Getz, started up Quango, a local label that imports/distributes lots of great music, including the fine pork imprint. It's good label & I've bought many of their CDs. Unfortunately their radio shows have lost that cutting edge they both use to have. Now all you'll hear is stuff off their label (nothing wrong with self-promotion), and lots of very 'commercial' stuff. A friend called what we heard one night on Metropolis, Jodeci Jungle. Jason use to play Autechre, Orbital, Seefeel and lots more...He also use to mix quite a lot on his show. Now, I'll turn on the radio and think I'm tuned into the wrong show. Lots of 'alternative' sounding music (and I don't mean Muziq). I have 40+ tapes of his old shows, stopping about 2 years back. I still listen to these tapes and am glad to have him doing what he was doing back then. He was one of the big influences that made me decide to become a DJ. Since then, I've had a residency at one of the same clubs at him. He seems like a nice guy, though I've only talked to him once or twice. Very professional: walks in, spins and walks out...I've never seen him dance, which makes me a little leery. I don't know...but I've been told, DJ's who don't dance to their own records ain't got no soul? Maybe I'm just jealous he makes a living from music, very few people in LA do. But I don't do it for the $$$, I do it because I love the music, the people, the vibe. Mix in the money and sometimes it just gets fucked up. 'nuff bitching, brock np: Alec Empire - 'low on ice'

You know, I've always wondered this myself. I don't dance at all. I nod and twitch a little, but electronic music... techno, for me is more of an emotional high than a physical one. I always wondered just how many people on the list sweat and ooze while bouncing to their favorite tunes? The only time I ever really danced was at the Orbital show at the Forum in London, England back in the fall of 1994. But anyone who has seen Orbital live knows of its tremendous power. Mind you, I saw them again in Toronto a couple months back, and reverted to spastic limb twitching. That's the extent of my craft. Do you really think that people who don't dance don't appreciate the music? I think that's a profoundly absurd question. It does however raise an interesting issue. not me. i've been listening, on and off, to music that has been described as danceable (old industrial, hip-hop) for some reason, and i've never, ever danced in my life. the closest i ever got was at a g. love and special sauce concert. but that's another, boring story. personally, i can't even conceive of dancing to most of the stuff discussed on this list, it's too damn interesting to want to jump around to. i'd rather let my brain soak in it, you know? It's always interesting to look at the danceability of music from the list. In the past I've dj'ed in clubs, where I want people to dance, and on the radio, where I could care less and I happen to be more interested in doing brain surgery on people. A couple of idm tracks that I have personally dropped (or seen) that have really pumped dancefloors: Polygon Window: quoth (but now always) everything by orbital (they never fail) Sabres of Paradise: smokebelch II Sabres of Paradise: Bubble & Slide (NOW mix) This one always garners, "That was great! What is it?" from numerous people. funk that bassline! FSOL: Slider Balil: Parasight Squarepusher mix of dj food (can't think of the name) FUSE - FU and Mantrax Tracks that didn't work: Autechre: (the detroit one on tri repetae)#6 aphex twin: heliosphan (too damn pretty) Reload: Le Soleil et la Mer (7/8 = odd shuffling) Green Velvet: Flash (I've seen people leave because there is little marking of beats 2 and 4.) And yes, i do think it's idm. SET PHASERS TO OVERDRIVE!! WOO-HOO! afx: the 2nd track on ABIV. Sound Enforcer on Rising High: a little too fast and complex. Black Dog: Parallel (makes me boogie like a jumping bean, but it killed the crowd one night.) Just an opinion, from someone who's seen different sides to dj'ing. There's some music that can be appreciated without dancing, and some that's hard to. I think people can appreciate ambient music (or purely harmonic music, like some Western classical music) without any physical involvement. It's head music. On the other hand, a raw, jacking 909 track is going to sound pretty monotonous and jarring without the physical involvement which turns it into a full-body rhythmic experience -- body music. Same with most pure drumming; the repetition involved is boring on a mental level but exhilarting to move to. Most everything is somewhere between those two extremes. People can appreciate things in different ways. The developing sounds and textures of a good minimal track can be experienced as a mental timbral journey or a physical journey through subtly changing rhythm and movement. Neither one is a less valid form of "appreciation". Hmm, but then again, I guess jacking 909 tracks aren't "intelligent"... ;) JM

Bah! Everytime I go to a fuckin' event and they bust out funky breaks or groovy beats, most of the suckerz are just sitting there, holdin' their unshaved chins, nodding contemplatively, like they're all intellectual an' shit. I imagine they're thinking some bullshit along the lines as "I say, dear chap, quite thrilling use of the filters and resonance effects, don't you say? oh-ha, oh-ha." Man....fuck that! Like the last time I saw Plaid in Berkeley...half the fuckers were standing around watching the blokes twiddle knobz for god's sake! In defense of Jason, I can understand having to play politics to survive. I listen to all of his Metropolis shows during the week, and then also to KROQ on Saturday nights from 1am to 5am. Normally on KROQ, I think as part of KROQs commercialist creed, he has to play some "modern rock" shite, but the later it gets, the more freedom he has IMHO, to play whatever he wants. I like Metropolis, and I honestly don't feel as though he is very commercial. He doesn't talk much, except to give names and labels, doesn't try to be funny <thank God> and plays everything from Mo' Wax stuff to Quango to Cup of Tea to Planet Dog. At club Bossonova, where he spins, I did see him come out on the dance floor for about 4 or 5 minutes. Just bopped his head....strange I thought, that he doesn't get down. But when I saw him spin after Meat Beat, Spooky and Loop Guru at the American Legion, he was getting down with his Jungle. So make your own conclusion. David S.

I have to agree. His show is a big waste of time these days. He never plays anything new anymore-- basically all he seems to be doing as of late is kissing Jack Danger's ass. He lost me when he started that whole KROQ thing. It's too bad because Metropolis used to be something to look forward to and a source of invaluable information.
