I'm having a lot of fun with getting the Perl programming language to output to a synth via MIDI. I am struck by how much more manipulable the music is as a program rather than as a flat MIDI file. It's also a lot more fun to create music that way. Is anyone else here writing code to write music for them, or something similar? v -- We still love to play with computers np: /Drum_Club/Live_In_Iceland/01_Oscillate_and_Infiltrate.mp3 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So what platform are you using? Is this real time? Details!

Using Opcode Max and Cycling 74's audio extensions to Max is a favorite trick of people like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Rich Devine, so you're in good company. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

GNU/Linux. We want our music to have freedom.

Yup, I'm using the MIDI::Realtime[1] CPAN module (which I had to write myself :). I don't have any .mp3's just yet but here's one of my friends first Perl music experiments (he has done a lot of other very good, heavily interactive stuff in other languages on the Mac): http://www.generative.net/mp3/walk-1.mp3 He put some sequenced (non-generative) drums under that. I have done some generative polyrhythms for it since but as I say, not in mp3 yet.

Is this a scripting thing? Sounds interesting. Max is actually a product originally from IRCAM. It's an open ended environment which transforms midi input based on a network of transformation objects that you connect up with a graphical interface. Max was marketed by Opcode -- this is bad since Gibson has basically destroyed Opcode after a big fight between Gibson and Opcode executives. We can only hope that Max will devolve back to someone who will market and support it. www.cycling74.com is a good place to start. This is strictly macintosh software, but considering the flexibility and uniqueness of the product, you need to compare the $2K or so it takes to buy a mac and get this running versus similar options, like a Nord Modular, or a Doepfer modular. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Here are a couple links to generative music tools I've been playing with lately: -- http://www.sseyo.com/ -- http://www.essl.at/works/flow.html I've been playing with Sseyo's Koan Pro 2 for the last week or so and it is a strange beast. After some crashes I think I finally have it where it works somewhat stably. Karlheinz Essl's Flow is an ambient music generator that looks like it is based on Ircam MSP. Very cool to have it run in the background, and you can play with various settings to alter the output. Really interesting stuff...
