although I've not head the _music for adverts_ lp, I must say the concept sounds suspiciously similar to a 40 track album put out by th Residents on Ralph records. Although the exact title escapes me, I believe it also makes reference to commercials. -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

Couldn't tell you. Though the album may be entitled "Music for Adverts & Short Films" the real scenario is simply short film and advert length musical pieces. Hi everyone-- I just posted about the Black Dog album...but right after posting, I gave another listen (to a friend's copy) I will say, it's growing on me. I spoke a bit too soon about the quality of this album (but I'm still curious to see if it coms out US domestic!) damn..it's too easy to say what you don't mean on these lists.. Back to the music -fp

I've given the album a fair share's worth of listening time. And though the album did grow a little, by no means is it anything to praise. While the writing process is quite unique, and each of the 26 sequences (they're hardly songs) at times have wonderful rhythmic drive and tightly written melody, the album lurches about, taking too many turns, and gets lost in progress. In all, Music for Adverts & Short Films is pleasant background music, but beyond that, it's hopelessly average. I thought it was a referance to Brian Eno's "Music for Films" :-/ bye, Eric.

As has been stated before - the title as I read it is at once a nod to Eno and a comment on artists like Underworld , Aphex who sell their music to the highest bidder to be used in ads , this would fit in with those who know Ken's sense of humour. sm@ 4 th world records uk http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/4thworld on now - b12 - prelude

Ken's sense of humour. Yup! And his dislike for Mr. James' music <BG> As an added point, to quote from a recent Wire interview with Ken : "Advertising sucks...the album is a look at how shallow and superficial we've become. The best products sell themselves by word of mouth" :-)) Bye, Eric. ... NP: The Hafler Trio - How to reform mankind
