3 old and 3 new records ----------------------- The OLD: finally I found a copy of: Africa Bambaata and the soul sonic force "Planet Rock" (Tommy Boy, 1982) Of course this record is a hammer, being one of the most important classics in techno/house-history. Pure electro in perfection. Very interesting what Arthur Baker did to the Krafgtwerk sample of "Trans Europe Express". A suprise was the beginning of the normal "Planet Rock" version. Don't I know those vocals from somewhere? Of course: Fast Eddie used that "yo yo get funky" in 1989 and Todd Terry/Royal House the "party people"-sample I think one year earlier. 10/10 Africa Bambaata and the soul sonic force "Looking for the perfect beat (Buscandp el ritmo perfecto)" (Tommy Boy, 1983) A friend of mine found this copy for me in Spain. This record is more under the influence of the upcomming breakdance-movement with scratching and stuff like that. The instrumental version is better than the overloaded vocal version. 8/10 Mantronix "Bassline" (Sleeping Bag/10 Records, 1986) This 12", you could call it an EP starts of with "Bassline (stretched)" and you might know that it has really a great bassline. From todays point of view, less rapping and faster speed would have been fine. Both versions of "Ladies" (Instrumental/Revived) didn't really get my attention. The last track "Get stupid 'fresh' part 1" is a nice mix of breaks, scratches, dope hip-hop beats and some rapping. 6/10 The NEW: Porter Ricks "Nautical Nuba/Port of Nuba" (Chain Reaction CR-09, 1996) The second Porter Ricks continues the row of interesting abstract vinyl on Chain Reaction after the disappointing CR-08. The tracks are basically built of the typical flowing, monoton rhythm and a leading sound, that could be a sample of horses hoof beating. My girl friend calles it "thumpyness", a play with various rhythm, echo, etc. 9/10 Richie Hawtin "Concept6" (+8, 1996) This Concept release also sounds somehow like a Basic Channel/Chain Reaction (sorry Richie! I guess you are sick of hearing that?!). It also has two major elements, the monoton, discreet rhythm and an analog (sounding) sound with various modulations/filtering. In contrast to most Chain Reaction releases there is more structure in these tracks. 8/10 I would wish that both Chain Reaction and Concept would once get out of this slow, calm tune. Hey, it's summertime! Party! Have fun! Are you all depressed or what's up?! :-) Will Web "Cosmic Driveby" (430West, DB4W-011, 1996) Of course Will is again on his electro trip and again I like to follow him. On "Spacewalk" he combines the dry electro-beat with acid sounds. That's still nicer than the standard acid played around the globe. "Mirrorshades" is presented in two mixes. The normal mix is too full, busy, loud and strong. The dynamics and the arrangement of the RMX-version is much better. Cool, funky electro as I love it. 8/10 Love & Peace, harald +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | visions and sounds from the wicked world of electronic dance music | | WWW -> http://rave.city.de/wicked | | a servive of http://www.music.city.de and Touch-Net | +--------------------------------------------------------------------+
