Hi everyone I haven't seen too much here about the Dr. Octagon release on MoWax ..I have heard that is is a rather interesting album, even though I don't care much for MoWax, I'm thinking of picking it up-- Any comments? I *did* here the Cyclob on RePhlex...didn't push me over the edge enough to buy it...maybe another listen will sway me (same boat as Mike & Rich..) Thanks for any thoughts.. -fp

I've been very critical about Cylob's output lately. Ever since I heard the Kinesthesia projects, as well as Cylob's first 12", "Industrial Folk Songs" I was extremely disappointed with the lack of imagination and musical depth that his releases had. And as a result, I got a fair amount of slack for my criticism here. Now, I haven't got a copy of the new Cylob, "Cylobian Sunset," but I realized I had to hear it. I must say, I was extremely impressed with what I heard. This is the first Chris Jeffs release I've actually enjoyed. The noise to synth ratio is comfortable enough to make the disc listenable, but still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Can't say much else, as I'm only going on a first impression, but it is a good one. While I'll agree that most of it is well-constructed and that QBert's scratching is phenomenal, I should also point out that the whole record is marred by a number of dismally juvenile scatological/pornographic vignettes. I'm not offended by this sort of thing, but it's not my idea of entertainment, either. I'm happy with a dub of the good tracks, but I give the album as a whole a miss. Miles

It should be noted that the Ultramagnetics' classic debut album, 'Critical Beatdown,' which tends to be hard to find, was recently repressed (in the US, at least), so go buy it if you like Dr. Octagon. :) Anybody know when the drum & bass mixes of "Blue Flowers" will be out on Mo'Wax, and if a CD release of them will happen? Already out. Photek mix on the one side, DJ Hype on the other, plus a neat octagonal hole in the sleeve. Both mixes use almost all of the vocal. And everyone should go buy "Critical Beatdown" whether they like Dr. Octagon or not. JM

Interesting. a variety of style laid down behind Kool Keith. A diverse of samples for a largely hip-hop albumn. But I personally could do without all the Gynecological references. I picked up the 12" of "Blue Flowers Remixes" about 3 weeks ago. It had a Photek remix that was nice, but not as good as some of his other stuff. I think there was a track I liked even better but can't remember...3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years: my mind is going. reguarding the CD, I think I saw it but once again not sure?!?!? sorry for the vague answers...not sure was real anymore. brock NP: Seefeel, "time to find me (AFX slow mix)"

Yeah, this is a cool album. This record must have the most differnet words on it then any other album I've got (and 45 of those are 'rectum'!) Erm, yeah, crazy clinical mad stream of wierd words and bizarre images come flowing out at 100 miles an hour with little rhythmic relation to the beats and slightly scary sounds going on underneath. Dr Octagon is concerned with scalpels, operations going wrong, and yes rectums, but somehow this is all utterly compelling stuff (except for a couple of tracks of porno samples which are a bit strong for me, but them maybe I'm just a prude, hmm?) It's in the pipeline, so I haven't heard it yet, but I hope it is as good as Earthling's "Radar". Totally spaced out wicked lyrics and groovy as hell, it beats the crap out of the majority of hiphop and triphop albums. Anyone even remotely into tr/hiphop won't be disappointed with it and since it's on Chrysalis IIRC, it should be available without too much trouble.
