OK, nothing personal here... but maybe you're hanging with the wrong kinda girl?! Don't make such generalisations about women. And on a lighter note... anyone gotta review of the Plug lp yet? I was at the launch night at the Blue Note in London and the stuff Vibert was playing was brilliant. Also... why all the arguments about trance dj's/melting vinyl? Since when was trance 'intelligent dance music'?! Suzy

Heh I wondered if Gonzi's comment would stir up a reaction... My girlfriend likes bits aand bobs, (I wish she was here to respond), Autechre in particular, but isn't really enthusiastic about most of the scene, lack of vocals/lyrics seem to be the biggest problem. But this is pretty much universal amongst technophobes irrespective of gender. g.

Well I was talking about Greg's Girlfriend who didn't seem quite too excited to be seeing Cylob. My girlfriend likes the stuff I play her, especially The Orb and Orbital and she doesn't seem to mind some of the hardcore Rephlexesque stuff. But now that you mention it (gross generalisation coming up) girls don't seem to be quite as interested in IDM as the boys. Probably more sensible than to be spending all their time hunting down obscure Aphex remixes. /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

Techno on the whole is male dominated, unfortunately. I tell you.though, when you find a female techno talent out there she's bringing a shit-load of a lot of interesting flavor and diversity to the scene. Saskia Sledgers, Heather Heart...

(remedial non-generalisation approaching)...i'm not going to speak for all girls, cos you can't, but _i'm_ sure as hell interested. of course, if you've got your head in some cd bin/pile o' vinyl looking for that obscure Aphex remix, that might be why you're missing the girl looking for the latest vibert release just behind you... --kristy

I can't find many females into IDM where I come from at all. One of my past relationships was w/ a girl who listened to nothing but Dee-lite 24 hours a day - she once threw something at me for refusing to play dee-lite while friends of hers were over - i just really didnt think it mixed well with the trip hop i was spinning. BUT - I now that IDM lovers of all genders are "out there somewhere" - there just arent many people at all who listen to IDM in richmond that I have met - BUT i digress DJ Ebben Flow Richmond VA

...Andrea Parker, Riz Maslen... A couple of months ago there was a voluntary self-survey on Kraftwerk-l, and it started the longest thread I saw on my six months there when it turned out that every respondent was a guy. The ensuing musicogenderal search for reasons was rendered even more poignant by the absence of female shout-outs or hand raising posts. Not a few regressed into stories of their conflicts with past girlfriends. This was so depressing to read about for like, a solid week that I had to unsubscribe. eric

Sorry but I'm just as stupid as the rest of you. I have nothing better to do with my time than fly to New York to see Orbital and dig through record bins looking for obscure Aphex remixes. While your generalization may be correct for many, it is certainly not the case for all. Every girl at a show is not there because her boyfriend dragged her there. In fact, I know several girls who have to drag their boyfriends to shows. On Wed, 24 Jul 1996 20:21:17 Fresh/Gonzi Merchan <GMerchan@gnn.com> wrote:

The Monday night techno/drum'n'bass thing I have going here in San Francisco, always finds me with some female exciteldy asking me what I just played... It could be that for reasons of economics, shitty radio stations, and just general lack of access to this music makes it harder to get in to the scene. Mohsen

Tuesday night as I stepped out of the booth I was also approached by a woman who wanted to know where else I spin etc. For those interested parties I put a small text file recap of the TRAINSPOT night on our W3 (http://beyond.hnt.com/) or http://beyond.hnt.com/rt/7RT23.txt if you don't want to hunt around for it. In a word it was "BOSS". :) Teep in my head: luke vibert "london is a country..." (MF glow in the dark shit!)
