Soul Oddity - Tone Capsule [Astralwerks] (10 tracks, 63:48)
-----------------------------------------------------------
I just got this CD today and I am really impressed with it. It's
suprising there hasn't been much mention of this CD yet on the IDM list
because it is definitely worth checking out. If you like electro,
Kraftwerk and weird bleepy noodlings then this CD will will be perfect for
you. The melodies are sharp and clean, but experimental at the same time.
Quite a bit of vocoder and nice drum breaks are thrown into the mix as
well. At times, the structure reminds me a bit of something that
Spacetime Continuum (Jonah Sharp is actually thanked in the liner notes,
by the way) or Autechre might come with. The sound palette isn't
quite as broad or dark as Autechre, but Soul Oddity makes up for this by
creating plenty of hypnotic electro groove-laden tracks that will keep
your head in motion throughout most of the CD. Vocal samples are
often tweaked out and added ala' something Coldcut might come
up with to give the music another dimension also. Overall, this is a very
impressive debut album from a band (Soul Oddity is Romulo Del Castillo
and Joshua Kay according to the credits) that looks to have a bright
future in the electronic music scene.
