I've always found it interesting that many people slag off Sniv, only like half of it, find it self-indulgent, etc., etc. It's one of my favourite albums. Having only discovered this genre of music very recently (Sept 94), my first Orbital album was Sniv, then 2, then 1, then many singles. I guess having purchased and listened to Sniv without having heard Orbital 2 allowed me to enjoy it much more. Those who enjoyed Orbital as a dance act must find it hard to accept a more ambient, listening oriented group now. I'm in the other boat. I new them as an ambient techno outfit na d can appreciate their early days as a dancier act. Does the evolution of a band's style and sound constitute a slap in the face to its current legion of fans? That's the impression I get from the traffic on both this list and the Orbital list. Dave

Not at all in my case. I wish Orbital would do *more* tracks like "Forever" and "Attached" from Snivilisation. These two tracks are simply magnificent. The rest of the album just doesn't match the brilliance of these tracks for me. When I said I only liked half of Snivilisation I guess that wasn't really true...I like most of it. It just doesn't seem to (overall) match the brilliance of their previous work. Also a couple tracks on Snivilisation are throwaways (for me) and I'm not really used to that from Orbital. Tony

I've always found it interesting that many people slag off Sniv, only like half of it, find it self-indulgent, etc., etc. It's one of my favourite albums. Having only discovered this genre of music very recently (Sept 94), my first Orbital album was Sniv, then 2, then 1, then many singles. I guess having purchased and listened to Sniv without having heard Orbital 2 allowed me to enjoy it much more. snivilization was (and still is), actually, one of my favorite albums, too. what i like most about it _is_ just how much it shows that orbital can do more than, say, 'lush,' or 'chime,' or 'satan,' or all the other nice stuff on 1 and 2. i honestly can't think of a more favorite first 25 seconds of a track than the beginning of "are we here," up 'til the 'what does god say?' bit. and i'm really impressed by the use of voice in tracks like 'i wish i had duck feet' or 'philosophy by numbers.' i think my biggest objection to the album, ultimately, is that i think it ends really poorly--it's almost as though it just fades off into the distance and you don't realize that you're still listening to that eternal, not very exciting last track (which i don't even remember the name of). so does anyone know when this new orbital album will go domestic in the u.s. (so i can afford it on a grad student stipend...)? (since it'll take 3 weeks to get here once i order it...) thanks! -dan brown snowman@orie.cornell.edu snowman@cs.cornell.edu
