I wasn't going to post this to the list (as pretty much any post that
isn't asking a direct concrete musical question makes for a wild
explosion of banter), but I will give you my personal oppinion on
inteligence in music in general (not just electronic music), because I
think "inteligence" has been picked on alot here lately (and somehow
made into a negative thing), and needs to be defended.
To me, inteligence in music means that the artist is taking a step
back, and looking at music in general, and making a conscious decision
on what he/she would like to include, what he/she would like to leave
out, and what he/she would like to add of their own. Much music I hear
(even in the catagory of "IDM") is nothing but a rehashing of other
people's work. Intelegence in music is defined to me by the amount of
creativity, inginuity, and apparent thought (or appropriate lack
thereof) put into creating it. To me, it is music that surprises me
with things that I have never heard elsewhere, (or variations on this
-- such as things I have heard before, but now are used in a new way).
Furthermore, music shows itself to be inteligent to me when it causes
ME to think about what is going on here, causing me to take a second,
third, etc... thought to figure out the patern that is going on, or not
being able to predict the first time I hear a piece, for example, where
the drum part is going to repeat, or what the next note is going to be,
or when the next structural change is going to be, etc...
Of course, this is only the surface, only some of MY qualifiers (and of
course there are always exceptions)... and I have so many more thoughts
about it that can't be put into words, or that I just don't feel like
putting into words right now... I guess Cage was right about "dancing
about architecture." Also, remember this is only my oppinion, not
concrete fact.
Lastly, don't make the mistake of assuming that electronic music
inherently takes more intelegence to make than any other type of music.
You can train a monkey to press buttons on a drum machine. Using
technology does not = inteligence.
Why do people seem to have such a problem with music that is made with
the artist's full intention of making something "inteligent"??? What is
wrong with wanting to make people think? Why is that snotty?
