Hey my IDM brothers and sisters, I know everyone talks about the 303 to death, but I need to ask a serious question. How was the 303 used when it first came to the market. ACID style music is a thing of the 90's (mostly). The 303 came out in the ealry 80's right? So in what ways did the buyers use it then? I remember seeing an explanation on analogue heaven that showed how to write an old Beatles tune using the 303/606. That is where I got interested in this. Are there any classic 80's pop tunes that I should look into to hear how the 303 was used prior to the whole tweak the thing like DRAX or PLASTIKMAN do today? I have a feeling that I may find something in the old breakdance/elektro stuff. You know like that Africa Bambatta. If any of you have any suggestions please reply. I was heavily into the old breakdance thing when I was a kid and I am just wondering if I miised something during the 80's. thanks, GMV500 videla@colorado.edu on now: morphogenetic fields (atom Heart)

In 1983 my then girlfriend who later became my wife bought me a 303 for my birthday. I was doing soundtracks for porno movies back then, so you can hear some early 303 usage (and 808) on such classics as "The Story of Prunella", "Forgive Me For I Have Sinned", and "Johnny Boy Blew". They are most assuredly out of print now, but you might want to check the cut-out bins of your local smut shop. I bet there are a lot of guys here who would marry any girl who would buy them a 303. :-) Che

the Roland TB-303 was originally brought onto the market to replace the most uncool of all band members, the bass guitarist. it didn't really take off and later found it's way into electronic music scene.......and blah, blah, blah... Right, check Heaven 17's "Let Me Go" for the FIRST distinct use of the 303 bassline (also one of the first uses of the 303 at all).

When I interviewed Youth of Killing Joke, he recommended the R&B band "Imagination" for the earliest (and most successful at bass-guitar-emulation) use of the 303. I found a few once and Imagination basically made smooth R&B - uptempo ballady stuff.

I think I heard it on the Breakin' soundtrack, just because of a few slides on one of those songs. It is really not that distinctive when programmed like a bass-guitar, imho, though useful because of the pattern-based sequencing approach. (Yes, I have used one in my music and can program it, so I know those idiosyncracies to look for, btw.)
