::: Luke Vibert : A Polished Solid (Mo Wax MV035)
We know who he is, we know what he does. Magic. The title track starts
things off with that crisp Vibert sound wrapped around a rather wacky
sample of "Oh, Christ." Radart opens the flipside with more of that funky
freestyle drumming sound and one of the best breaks I've heard in ages.
As the drums drop out, some distorted hissing highs kick in followed by
what sounds like the opening to a news radio show in lofi sound, then
topped off with a little military style drumming before its back to the
bassline. Frogs Belly plays out the EP with one of those Vibert jazz
improv sessions complete with all the trimmings. You can almost smell
the smoke.
::: Gescom : The Sounds Of Machines Our Parents Used (Clear CLR408)
New one from the Gescom boys. Puzl opens the EP and immediately
spoons out some of that deep metallic Autechre flavour. As one might
expect, It's heavy on the rhythmic percussion with some explicit electro
references. Finishes up with a long extended outro. Go Sumo picks up the
pace with another electro inspired number thats comprised of a slightly
buzzed funky synth line over a continually building rhythm section. Go
Sheep finishes it all off in majestic style with a slow funk track with
some huge breaks for the jazz organ to do its thing. Beautiful, best yet
from Gescom.
::: Bochum Welt : Les Dances D'Ete (Kromode KRM03)
More from Mr Gianluigi Di Costanzo, this time on tasteless transparent
yellow/gold vinyl. The first track, Melodie D'Aout, has a gorgeous analogue
feel to it and a distinctive retro/electro flavour - sounds like it could
have been the theme to a late seventies version of Tomorrows World/Beyond
2000. The second track, Le Silence Du temps, continues the retro theme
with bleepy arcade game percussion underneath a childlike chime melody.
The flipside, with more robot artwork, changes modes slightly with a shot
of darkness in the form of La Pensee. Its main feature is a pattern
of distorted hissing hats that climb and fall over a rather interesting
drum pattern. La Nuit takes us to the runout with a cavernous drippy
ambient track. Nice stuff.
::: Mind over MIDI : Elektrical Aktivity EP (Beat Service BS003)
Nordic tunes from Helge Tommervag by way of Beat Service Records. The
records two sides are labeled dance/listen and, surprisingly, its the
listen side where my attention lies. The first track, Soundscape, draws
considerable influence from Autechre and has many of those same metallic
rhythmic qualities forming a really nice sound. The second track, E.Scape,
has a certain lofi feel to it with a dulled punchy rhythmic section and
cascading synths.
More soon.
