No. I had drinks last week with an A&R guy from Warners, and his comments were "his stuff is already recorded, even if it doesn't sell huge, it doesn't need to to make money." Warners has traditionally carried acts much weirder than Aphex Twin for years. The bands that get dropped are the ones that get a big advance to record, and then don't sell enough records to cover the advance. His only other comment on Mr. James is that he was 'totally uncooperative' with promotion. -- Bob Dole has been adopted by an Indian tribe. Is he actually signed to Warner Brothers, or are they just licensing his Warp output through that Warp-WB subsidiary deal? I'd guess that if they are licensing it, it's not costing them as much compared to what they might pay him out-right for his output. I would say that RDJ's latest electronic ramblings don't really fit the corporate mold at WB. "Cow Cud is a Twin" still sounds to me like a demo track of sorts. Not good for an artist they (potentially) could be paying big bucks for. IMHO, of course. Andrew is correct. The way I understand it, the 6 album deal he signed with Warp covered everywhere except the United States and parts of Asia (?) where they would be licensed to WB's. :: Alan M. Parry :: fluid@hyperreal.com :: <finger me for PGP key> :: http://hyperreal.com/~fluid

Warner does (or is it "did"?) have a tendency to stick with artists that they really like (the Chills and the Flaming Lips, for two). Now if it was Geffen, they might try to sue him for not making commercial enough music (just ask Neil Young). I can't really believe that RDJ is actually making more money at WBros than he did at indie labels, unless he is getting the outrageous "no strings attached" signing bonus. From what I've read and heard, moving to a major and making as much money as one did at an indie usually necessitates increasing sales fourfold (at least). Then again, the Warner stuff does tend to stay in print a bit longer... :) c Cody Junior's Farm Records (Web Pages being renovated)

Some followup here... So, if WB hears a release from RDJ they don't like, technically they don't have to license it. I guess if they think it will sell buckets, they'll release it. But a licensing deal would be of minimal risk to WB, unless the contract/deal states they will license X releases from Warp in Y length of a time period. In that case, near the end of the time period, they might be pushed to license stuff or cough up cash. Will "Donkey Rhubarb" make a US cd single? Hrm...
