I got this a few days ago and I still don't get it. Coming from the standpoint of someone who has really gotten into these guys in the past but hasn't bothered to seek out any rare or non-cd material, I am pretty disappointed in the whole thing. Not only am I disappointed, but also confused. Some questions. Pardon my tone but I am quite angry as I write this. It *is* a flame, so fair warning. - By what standard are the Reload tracks Reload and the Link tracks Link, etc. It used to be you could listen to one of their songs and know what name they'd released it under without looking. I'll grant that some of this stuff is kind of old, but it still seems to render the name differentiations meaningless. - When did Reload become just Pritchard? When did Middleton become E621? So was Middleton on _Short Stories_ or not? Is Link Pritchard? Is Middleton Chameleon? Is there a logic to this or do they expect us to give a shit for the sake of giving a shit? I must admit to not caring at all until I got this record. I care now because I hate it. Used to be: You put them on and they blew you away, and who cared in what context. But what the hell is this? The material itself, much of it is old and I have no problem with that they made it at all, but the manner in which they it compiled, and the choice of WHAT to compile...well.... - Why did they put so much corny shit on here and leave of so many essentials that you can still only get on comps, etc? - Is this the full length Link album that was promised? When I wrote to them bitching about the oh-so-Dedicated _Maiden Voyage_ and said what I said about what this was to be, I was KIDDING, okay? I didn't expect them to take me seriously. I am so sorry, everyone. Why put out what is essentially a greatest hits album, and pock it with a few songs by other people? Does anyone else here find that to be quite as irritating as I do? - Electro revival bitching aside: Assuming we all want an electro revival, is Jedi Knights a serious attempt? Maiden Voyage was bad; The Theory of Evolution has more good material than those wretched little singles, but not much, and defintely not on balance. Taken as a whole, it is probably the worst thing to come out on Warp that I can think of--and that's counting Spanners. What in the hell happened, and why? And why did no one attempt to stop them before it was too late? All things considered, Sexomatic is a pretty stylish track. Ah well, another day, another fallen angel, another convoluted aesthetic collapsing under its own weightlessness. Screw it. einexile

I have to correct you. Not to flame, but just to spread information. K-Hand's Global Warning EP was the absolute worst release by Warp. I picked it up because it had the pretty purple cover like RAC-Tangents and GAK, but disappointment is a mild word for this one. It downright sucks. An absolute ripoff. It sounds like someone trying to sound like Aphex Twin, but just sounds like some dumb teenager who listens to a lot of ZYX got a hold of his friend's keyboard and made something he thought was cool. The Warp guys must've been stoned when they listened to this pile of crap. Mistress ov Good Taste

Woah! strong stuff. Admittedly its not WARPs strongest release, but this is better than Rhythm Inventions "Inventures in Wonderland" LP imo - that is just boring. There are only about 3 or 4 strong tracks, and most of these had already been released as singles. The rest is just bland. Any more nominations for "least favourite WARP release" ? Call me goofy, I thought Inventures was spot-on strong. The worst Warp release, straight of the top of my head, was most likely "Devastating Beat Creator" by Kid Unknown. The Second worst was "Nightmare" by the same fella. The Ice-T samples sounded cool for about thirty seconds. The real reason I think these were so crappy was due to the fact that two weeks after their release, they sounded totally dated. I still can't listen to them. Stupid hardcore anthems. "Blueprints" by Wildplanet is pretty unlistenable amateurish stuff. Granted, they pretty much secured a Warp deal with the LFO-esque "Electron" single (the only remotely-good track they've done), but everything else on that album is unlistenable. For _oddest_ Warp release I'd nominate Nightmares on Wax "Word of Science". Someone described this as a combination of Cabaret Voltaire and De La Soul (I guess the best parts) and they're probably right, and this stuff really works! They exist alright. They're doing stuff on Mo' Wax now. It's pretty good if you like that Mo' Wax/trip hop stuff. I'm not very excited by it though. I can live without trip hop. I can't seem to get into it. -robert ______________________________________________*AudioElectronic*_____ "UFO: Starting with the MG Frequency knob at 0, sonic explorers \ as you turn up the knob, \ the UFO will sound like it is taking off." -> MS-20 manual ____\

Damn, here we go agian. I thought Blueprints was spot-on. Heavy, underproduced, squonky, melodic. Electron was bitchin' as well. Simon Hartley went on to concoct the fine "Feedback" ep on FNAC, which I also felt good about. Nightmares on Wax are due any day with "Smokers Delight", the US domestic version of which is much anticipated among the masses. I thought a word of science was pretty good, though it had debatable moments ("Mega Donutz"), but tracks like "A Case Of Funk" worked it fine. This was, imo, about as much fun as you could have mixing bleepstyle dance tunes with funk. A unique LP, any way you look at it. LFO are soon to have a full length out, and remixes from the Sabres of Paradises "Haunted Dancehall" are due any day. (Remixes of Tow Truck, if memory serves me, which it often don't) ______________________________________________________________________________ Cameron psu00110@odin.cc.pdx.edu Blacksmith on the anvil in your ear Electronica for the Jaded and Discerning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Wed, 26 Apr 1995, Harvey Thornburg wrote:

Yeah, _A Word of.._, is bloody wierd, I actually only got it (on CD) a fortnight ago. A few of the tracks are good, especially the wierd bleepy first one, I felt that all the tracks relied far too much on samples. Easily the most sample ridden WARP release. _How Ya doin'_ kicks tho! Their new LP _Smokers Delight_ is out in the UK on July 17th. The reason for the delay is twofold. A) Big problems with sample clearance apparently and B) George was very ill with pneumonia. Well, there's a story behind these 2. Kid Unknown was actually DJ Nipper, once big time 'rave' DJ in the UK. He'd had _Nightmare_ out on a white label for ages, it was a massive success - I remember being in WARP the shop one Saturday, and having a huge succession of kids ask for the one that goes "I am a..." Think this prompted Steve & Rob to pick it up. I remember Chris (One half of R.A.C. being fairly dismissive of _Beat Creator_ at the time, I never bothered to buy it. Still like _Nightmare_ tho'. Pure nostalgia! greg The Official WARP Web Site 3 0 3 http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n264671/wap-indx.html

I won't say anything about the EP itself, not having heard it. I do recall it got a pretty favorable reception on the 313 list. Differences between the 313 list aesthetic and the IDM list aesthetic probably account for the differences noted above... ;) the EP you so thoroughly savage wasn't made by some dumb teenaged boy, it was made by Kellie Hand, who runs her own label, Acacia, out of Detroit (although I've heard she's moved to Atlanta). As far as the _Theory of Evolution_ goes, I suspect someone looking for "Global Communication's Greatest Hits" would be disappointed, but as a historical document of a forward-thinking dance label I think it works pretty well. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com born freeke <A HREF="http://www.msen.com/~marmoset/">Dave Walker</A>

Actually, I wouldn't mind so much except that I hold 76:14, A Collection of Short Stories, Auto Reload 2, Pentamerous Metamorphosis, and the various comp tracks and remixes in such high regard. I am hardly even disappointed--more in the realm of insulted. I guess if you're talking in strict terms of the EVxxx releases, then no, I don't like most of them-- but that's just because I don't enjoy them, and isn't the reason these guys have started to make me *angry*. e

OH NO! The WORST has to be the DJ Mink - Hey Can You Relate. So everyone with an original pressing should send me theirs! Let's rid the planet of the worst track of all time!!! (might as well send me your Ozone pressings as well) I will hold a public burning. In fact why not send me ALL your Warp releases and I'll put all those blashpemous vinyls to a final rest!!! Toss in all those horrid Antacid and Ventolins to the bonfire of melting wax!!! DOWN WITH WARP! LONG LIVE 2UNLIMITED!!!!!!! -robert ______________________________________________*AudioElectronic*_____ "UFO: Starting with the MG Frequency knob at 0, sonic explorers \ as you turn up the knob, \ the UFO will sound like it is taking off." -> MS-20 manual ____\

Don't reckon all that much to the Raz stuff. ie Resoraz/Black Mojo. I still think Ventolin was poorly judged. greg The Official WARP Web Site 3 0 3 http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n264671/wap-indx.html
