Hello. I'm just joined this IDM news group, and I'm slowly wielding my way around this excellent service. I'm hoping to attract some interesting responses to this letter, to keep my teenage afternoons free of misery and Offspring infested gloom. A little about my tastes. Hard to say... I really like most of the Warp offerings, and my favourite band is Autechre (not saying that I reject everything else... just to say that I like them A LOT!) I heard an interview with them in Toronto a year and a half ago, upon the release of Incunabula... and the interviewer asked them about any side projects. They replied something along the lines of they have some, and refuse to tell... big secret! Does anybody know any of Autechre's side projects? Next question...I own two CD's by Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton, who I think is are extremely gifted musical artists. I own Reload's A Collection of Short Stories... and I've got the Global Communications album, 76:14. There's a new album called, "The Theory of Evolution" featuring artists like Link, Reload, and Wishmountain. I know that Link is also Mark Pritchard (and Tom Middleton), so my question is, could this be an entire album of Mark Pritchard side projects? Kind of like 'Bytes' by Black Dog, with all the different names like Balil, etc...? Also, E621 is a side project isn't it? Are there any other albums available by the duo. I think they're brilliant. Next question. What ever happened to Sonic Bubblegum by Aphex Twin? Is this CD what "I care because you do" out April 27th is supposed to be? And is there an actually song called Ventolin? Or is it just that asthma gadget "remixed"? Can anybody tell me small quips and queries about these discs: Mu-Ziq vs. The Auteurs (I have Tango'n'Vectif, is it like that??) Wagon Christ (En Atmo... like Aphex Twin? Donno.. you tell me) The new Spicelab album, I have the first one... are they the same? RAC - anything... whatzitlike? And finally, I have only been living in London, England for the last 6 months, and will continue to live here for another 3 months, and then move back to Toronto, Canada. Since its quite difficult to get FAX discs in Canada (without waiting...and waiting...) I've been trying to collect a few. I'm interested in knowing what people have to say about the following discs.... short reviews... queries.. type of music, etc. My only experience with Fax are two discs, "Music to Films" with Dr. Atmo, and Oliver Lieb (Spicelab fame) and 1 Year Dance, a compilation of old Fax techno and hardtrance songs. I also have an Air song on the Road to Tranquility 2 CD. Can anybody tell me about these discs: Air 2 Dark Side of the Moog (Namlook and Klaus Schultz I think) Atom Heart - Orange Atom Heart - Live at Sel I know this is a HELL of a lot of questions... but I'm starving for knowledge, in this amazing musical genre. Keep in mind, I have a small budget for my musical supply. I have a pretty large collection of IDM... and am always interested in learning about more music. - --+-------------------------------\/--. /\ __ __ ______ __ __ |/\ `------. _// \/ ____ _ _ ____ \/ \\_ "You're in the scene, not | \(_ \ \(O/ \O)/ / _)/ just watching it anymore, and the | \/ _)/ _/\ \(_ \/ sense of presence is overwhelming." | /_ __ \ ______ \ | ( (_____/\ _____/ | | |\ \ Aaron Michelson | \__________ \/ \_|_|_|_|_) ) prizm@stevect.demon.co.uk / | \ _______________/ // | \/ +------------------------------------------+

Autechre have also done some work under the name Gescom. I think they have just one EP out now, but another is due for release on Clear in the next month or so.

Was Sonic Bubblegum supposed to be released on R&S? I forget. If it was, I doubt we'll see it. I heard that the recent Aphex Twin Classics release finally ended his contract for R&S, and about time too. I Care Because You Do is his next full length release and is part of the six album deal he signed with Warp about 2 years ago.

There is a track called Ventolin on I Care Because You Do, but all the track on the latest two-part EP have very little in common besides the name Ventolin itself.

Yep, both excellent releases. MuZiq VS The Auteurs has been a favourite recently..

At Atmos. Not really like Aphex Twin, well, maybe a few of the Ventolin tracks. Basically a slow jazzy/hip flavour. Also see the Weirs LP on Rephlex as one-half of Vibert & Simmonds. :: Alan M. Parry :: fluid@hyperreal.com :: <finger me for PGP key> :: http://hyperreal.com/~fluid

Pretty much mine too. WARP is the top lable IMO. You might like a copy of my Autechre discog?

Just GESCOM as far as I know.

You may have just spotted my run-through of this CD. As I understand it, Wishmountain is not another alias, but actually someone else, but you're right about GC, Reload, Link/E621, also Chameleon and Jedi Knights are all the same people. Versatility is the key

There's the oft-mentioned remix LP of Chapterhouse "Blood Music", subtitled "Pentamerous Metamorphosis" - brilliant in a similar vein to 76:14. I think there's quite a lot of older rare stuff as well. If you have a web browser check out the GC page at http://http2.brunel.ac.uk:8080/~cs92bbm/global/global.html

The Auteurs remixes are very good. I suspect Mu-Ziq didn't like the original tracks a bit so he sampled 3 seconds of each track and wrote the rest by himself. Sounds like the auteurs being drowned... About the spicelab, well I don't like the first one but 'a day in our planet' Is much better, I have a problem with Lieb though as I sense his music to be too cold. Great technique yeah and in some moments you stop and say 'WOW!' but the melody is so unoriginal and predicted. Nice but not essential. Snow.

There was an rticle on this remix pack in the NME a while ago. Luke Haines(?) of The Auteurs said that "Mike will probably say that he did it for the money,". The next paragraph began with Mike Paradinas saying "I just did it for the money,". Well, I laughed. || [CiM] || u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

I was kinda wondering about this -- how do artists react when it's so obvious that the person remixing their work has such blatant contempt for it? In this case, the friction produced a worthwhile record, but you have to wonder what JoeBob Auteur thinks about it... ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker marmoset@msen.com new frontiers in pleasure management <A HREF="http://www.msen.com/~marmoset/">Dave Walker</A>

There's a Ventolin EP coming out, that is closer to a whole album ... Look at the archives at hyperreal.com (if you can) and there are reviews, or write to teep (aran@mit.edu) and have him give you a copy of the review. RDJ also has a whole album coming out on warp sometime soon -- the release date flew by a few days ago.

It is and it isn't. The trademark FM-kick drum through a fuzz box syncopation is there, but he took songs off the Auteurs albums and deconstructed them. I get the impression he didn't really like the original record, but he did find a few choice lush harmonic snippets and worked them well. I'd put Tango as an 11 on a scale of 10, and M V A at an 8.

Phat Lab Nightmare comes highly recommended -- I let it go by because I'm on a fax kick.

You can get them fairly cheap directly from the FAX US representative: Charles Uzzell-Edward (415) 221-7289.
quoted 1 line Air 2> Air 2
Lovely, almost new-age-with-an-edge. Not beat driven, but lots of ethnic instruments and choirs. Others I have and like a lot Namlook IV (Power Supply) -- Live in SF. Namlook VII (Subharmonic Interference) -- Live Berlin Love Parade. The live records are amazing. Being live, Namlook has to assemble a bag of tricks (beats/samples/synth patches) and then recombine them live, perhaps soloing over the top. The 'bag of tricks' is one aspect of the composition, and the real time choices he makes is the other. If you know anything about synth gear, it's very much a tightrope walk, and quite engrossing to witness. A Day in the Park : Dr. Atmo/Pino/Wildjamin Understated funk would be my two word description. This disc has a real programmatic aspect -- it starts with the sound of children playing, and kicks into gear with a syncopated beat. This is chill music to be sure, but turn it up loud and close your eyes -- you won't go to sleep. Tetsuo Inoue Organic Cloud: Dark, Minimal, slowly unfolding I've yet to hear a FAX release that out-and-out sucked. The biggest problem I have is that if I bought every FAX disk I saw, I'd not have enough time to listen to them enough to really get to know them. The FAX method takes some getting used to. A lot of the discs are out&out improvisations live -- Peter Namlook asking the musical question "What happens when I put this bloke in front of this wall of gear?" But I believe that if you meet the music half-way it's as interesting and exciting as anything out there.

Just written a quick note about the new LP 'I Care Because You Do' to IDM. Released on 24 April. Get it! The Ventolin EP and Remix EP appear later this month - 27th march. very hard, very wierd. 6 tracks on each. Check out the details and the artwork on WWW - http://www.cnl.ac.uk/~n264671/

If you like Tango... you'll like the Auteurs remixes, they're just a little less mad, more ambient, still got the beats tho! greg http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n264671 3 0 3

Luke Vibert said he made this LP because Rising High wanted a 'dark, ambient' LP to release. Vibert has practically disowned it, saying that he knocked it up in a few hours. Check out his _Rissalecki EP_ on Rising High (UK Neighbours fiends should find the name familiar; switch the 'ss' and the 'ck' round; ta-da! Rick Alessi!) and try and locate his ageing (but ace) _Sunset Boulevard_ 5 tracker on Rising High.
