PUP LP1 - Throws a spanner in the WARP discog works for those
Artist: The Black Dog sad enough to be interested
Title: Spanners
Formats: LPx2 CD MC?
Released (UK): 16/1/95
At last, the much promoted 3rd BDP LP arrives!
With all of nineteen tracks! It's "love it or loath it" format is very
similar to _Bytes_; short interludes typically <1 min between the real core
tracks. This time they're called Bolts (they were the 'Phils' on _Bytes_).
After listening to it all evening yesterday a few things stand out.
1. It's all good.
2. Some of it is very good.
3. Some of it is absofuckinglutely brilliant.
The most outstanding track for (i've forgotten the title!) me is the one
at the end of the A side. Typical BDP, intricate drum rythyms and patterns
winding round each other, while a subtle 303 line builds up before BAMM it
just takes off and goes mental!
The lp as a whole has more polished feel than previous works, none of the
rawness of _Temple of.._. The BDP traits are there for all to see,
complex beats, beautiful strings (some recalling _Bytes_) and just
downright jazzy funkiness, techno style!
Vocal samples are more in evidence, and used to good effect.
Artwork is good, with a computer generated eygptian feel, a 3 headed
Anubis like, black dog on the cover, a fucked up bird god thing on the
back. All the BDP email addresses are included btw.
Check it out!
