Global Communications "Maiden Voyage" EP GLOBA 001CD(1) Maiden Voyage (AKA 8'07 from 76:14) Maiden Voyage (Spiritualized Electric Mainline Mix) Funk in the Fridge Global Communications "Maiden Voyage" EP GLOBA 001CD(2) 7'39 (link and e621 appliance of science mix) Maiden Voyage (Grid mix) Maiden Voyage (Brook mix) I'm hooked on Global Communication, so these were a must buy, and I was not disappointed. Some of the remixes are completely new tracks for all intents and purposes -- maybe they were playing the original in the next room while the mixer worked. Which is good -- anyone who remixes GC has the standard of the Chapterhouse remixes to live up to. "Funk in the Fridge" has to be the find in the bunch, as it is a complete left turn stylistically for GC. The 7'39 remix could even work on the dance floor, where most of their stuff would not. If you can only buy one buy #1, for Funk in the Fridge. My perfect EP would lose the original 8'07 and the Spiritualized remix and keep everything else. Heck, that would be more minutes of Fine Entertainment than the average Sammy Davis Jr. LP! 8'07 is the cut on 76:14 with the repetitive Fender Rhodes loop. I'd almost have preferred they leave off the album version and include the Orb mix that's mentioned (perhaps incorrectly) in the discography on Ben Middleton's web site. The Spiritualized mix takes the rhodes loop minus the chord variation and layers distorto-guitars, mumbled voices, and saxophone over. Nice if you're into the Spectrum/Spritualized drone thing, but not my thing. Funk in the Fridge starts with a rainstick and bongo intro, and then cuts into the BOOM BOOM BAP hip hop drum thing. Flute floats in, and then guitar. After a while in come the saxes. Is it acid jazz? I kept expecting Marvin Gaye to start singing. Then it would be a perfect track! The 7'39 link&e621 mix bears absolutely no resemblance to the cut it ostensibly remixes. Great stop-start drum loop, with a sort of heart THUMP thump bass drum. It brings to mind people with uneven length legs dancing. It gradually evolves into something acid-trancey. The Grid mix borrows some samples and perhaps drums from the original but is otherwise is all loping drums and sound effects, with a wistful flute melody in the background. The Michael Brook mix takes the basic 8'07 loop and uses it a skeleton to dress up with warm loopy guitar work. A fine blanket to wrap yourself in. -- Kent Williams -- kent@gilligan.cadsi.com Look in the mail header for all sorts of vital information about me. Edwin Meese made me wear CORDOVANS!!

Careful... says Ben! ... About Maiden Voyage.... Does anyone know exactly what happened to the ... rumored Orb mix and why it was finally left off the singles? Ben Middleton, ... are you listening...? :) What remains of the Orb mix is still there (the last bit of the e621+link appliance of science mix) however kris weston and co are mentioned in the crdits for that track... The original was unsuitable basically... (I have no idea about the politics of this)... Incidently... I think Michael Brook could have done better...
