I'm looking for some scary music to listen to. Something along the lines of the following: Coil-the Snow EP and Hellraiser Themes (especially the MBM remixes) Aphex Twin-, SAW II, Analogue Bubblebath 2 and 3 (the songs) Tangerine Dream-Phaedra Ambient 4-Isolationism (haven't heard the whole thing...any verdicts) Tell me what scares (enough to freak you out) to listen to. PS-Let's limit that to music, thank you. Kathy, mistress of the dark.

Here's some of my scary stuff... Tangerine Dream: Zeit (like crazy space music, feel like Bowman in 2001) Robert Schroeder: Time Machine (from "Paradise" LP, animal shrieks and dissonant acoustic twangs over analogue strings etc) Leo Anibaldi: Nothing has Changed 12" (not ambient but scary techno, esp at the end of title track, sounds like ragtime band in hell!) afx: Analogue Bubblebath 3 trk 8 (on CD... reverbed strings etc... at one point some machine clicks and it does your head in what with all the delay etc) Plasma Lamp 12": (hmmmm, just weird and eerie) Scanner CD 1: (goes without saying!) Absolute (?): (some CD from Seattle that is _so_ fucked up I think only zombie heroin addicts from hell would get into it!) I have more but I can't think of it now! I like collecting that sort of stuff to play in ambient sets and scare people half to death! Brendan Nelson Kinetic Illusion

Blue Pearl's "Mother Dawn" (Buckateer (Orb) Mixes) Creaking door and floor sounds accompny heavily-echoed banging and clanging in a dub stylee, complete with slower than slow dub rhythm and bass on two tracks lasting something like 12 minutes apiece. A third, shorter track is just the creaking and a weird bass sound, very ambient which almost sets your mind adrift until it is startled back to reality with a surprise ending. chris

Why don't you try the Twin Peaks soundtrack? I can't remember track eight's name, but it still gives me the creeps, and I've had the album for four years now. Phil On Now: AI2

For some REALLY scary things, check the following: LUSTMORD: Monstruous soul BOYD RICE AND FRIENDS: Music, Martinis and Mysanthopy CURRENT 93: early stuff, notably Dogs Blood Rising on LAYLAH rec. (a lot of stuff on that label is dark) Some of the early HAFLER TRIO also, or even Throbbing Gristtle. If you want more, ask, I could do a more thorough search. Alain M.

As far as noise: Diamanda Galas, Numb, Clock DVA, Einsturzende Neubauten, Psychic TV, some of the free jazz stuff (ayler, murray, sharp, sharrock). I havent heard much Yoko Ono, but I know people who claim to cringe at the thought of being exposed for a split second to her music. As far as utterly *bad* music [these are only my opinions, meaning no disrespect to anyone who may like what I hate]: country music (except kd lang and Lyle Lovett), true Muzak (the stuff geriatric Republicans listen to), and, as I wince at the thought of it, Southern Rock a la .38 Special, Lyrnyrd Skynyrd, ZZTop -- UCK! As far as genius: the jazz masters (Bird, Monk, Mingus -- these guys were crazy and I'd swear you can hear it in their playing); the men and women who pioneered the blues and soul; the modern recordings of authentic tribal groups (don't'cha wish they had tape recorders back in the stone age? Now that would be *seriously* scary?); a lot of the new acid jazz (especially the stuff on Mo'Wax and Ninja Tune); and some of the really hard techno (IOTD5 = *the* best comp of the year, IMO). Music as all things are is relative to thine own ears-- Peace to all.
