Oh sure there is a Finnish rave culture! Maybe not so much Finnish music, Sahko is the only major label ;-) I know of. But there are many clubs in Helsinki where I live (yeah sometimes Finns calls them clubs even if they are one night events) and some underground warehouse raves too. I'm not an expert on S[HK\ (or SAHKO, not SAKHO) RECORDS but I've read some articles about them. It's a very small record label. I believe the same few guys that run the label does some rave organizing. The only Sahko vinyl I have is the 004 (Hertsi: Kohina). Nice noise (made with an Amiga btw), makes my whole room resonate when played loud :-) I don't have the latest discography but here's a list picked from an article on EX magazine (Finnish rave culture magazine): (The article is really about the disc cover graphics etc) 001 12" 0: Rontgen jan 93 800 002 12" 0: Kvantti mar 93 800 003 12" Orchestra Guacamole: Saab 96 jun 93 600 004 12" Hertsi: Kohina sep 93 900 005 12" Philus: pH dec 93 500 006 CD Metri feb 94 1000 The number at the last column is the number of discs pressed so you can see why it's not too easy to get them in Holland. There is a record store Spinefarm Records that sells Sahkos. Maybe you might try to order from them. Their address is Box 212, 00181 HELSINKI, FINLAND. Tel +358-0-6944660, fax +358-0-6944662. Or contact directly to Sahko Records, their address is Rehbinderintie 3, 00150 HELSINKI, FINLAND. Tel +358-0-638848. Oh it's always a pleasure to get some mail! pablo@pcuf.fi ps. Some translations: sahko = electricity kohina = noise And a bit more: New releases: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Panasonic sahko 7 Mike Ink + rmx sahko 8 Jimi Tenor `Sahkomies' sahko/ puu 1 It didn't take more than a few releases for Sahko records to reach for cult status. Rudimentary, aboriginal, freaked out analogue delicatessen shining thru every release - up to the 8th one - packed in the recycled paper of sahko covers. Similarily, sahko's music itself travels thru some recycling process. It seems that the label's allegiance goes to crushing, mushing and pulverising different styles of music, allowing them to get ripped off during the re- assembling phase. Result? 1, Music fucked in the ass, choked down the throat, perverted to the bone. 2, An unveiled, alterated, smoking, finish and zulu kinda aural pandemonium. 3, An outragreous interpretation of musical minimalism - credit given to both Erik Satie and Dan Bell. More concretely, Jimi Tenor plays a moody saxophone on sampled voices and a beat-box. He sings when he feels to, vaguely trading linguistic currencies for some more 'grazy' ambience. Panasonic, second mass consumption foolery after Saab, proposes two disintegrating mantras: one heavy, one light, both repetitive, endlessly toxic. Mike Ink is acid music at his simplest, nudest, most obscene. 303 strains become dots, leaving nothing in between. Mono Junk makes an ambient remix out of this. Makes no sense at all. Tracks list: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Jimi Tenor `Sahkomies' A-side: `Theme Sax' `Grazy Hammond' `Union Ave.' `Take Me Baby' B-side: `Matti B' `Terasmies' `Voimamies' `Travelin Dem Spaceways' Mike Ink + rmx A-side: Rosengranz Dativ B-side: Melodymix (by Mono Junk) Roughmix (by Mono Junk) Panasonic One track on each side with no titles. ********************************************************************** For additional ordering information, please e-mail to Dialectrique at prombaux@ulb.ac.be ********************************************************************** If you wish to receive the complete catalogue of Dialectrique, pleases email to the adress above and specify if you want the ASCII version or the customized version (in uuencoded form) for pc users. ********************************************************************** If you wish to receive previous digests, please send queries by email. ********************************************************************** For all people who wish to subscribe to our mailing list: send email with `subscribe digests' in the subject header.
