PLASTIKMAN Plastique/ Freak/ Ethnik (Novamute 34)
I seem to be able to play this at 33 or 45 rpm, and I can't decide if it's
a gimmick by Hawtin, or if it's an attempt to involve the listener in the
creative process. One thing is for certain: this record and the forthcoming
album will both be monsters. Some will be tempted to say that the new album
will be full of outtakes that Plus8 wouln't use. I would be less cynical,
and just say that there's not much on this 12" that can't be found on Sheet
One, and as such, this doesn't exactly contribute to the development of the
scene. However, I will be buying the new album. It's dangerous to ignore
the work of Hawtin. He's there, and one shouldn't pretend otherwise.
Far out son of lung "Smokin Japanese Babe" Very very weird "jap-space-hop"
. Rumour has it that "*Far-out *Son *Of *Lung" is in fact *Future *Sound
*Of *London in disguise, though this may just be a myth. Do you know the
truth? Pure Sheng would like to know. See the Dopepage for contact
information.
Lida Husik & Beaumont Hannant -- Star/ Starburst 7 (Rough Trade)
This may be seen as a radical departure by Beau from his usual arena of
crisp techno to the hectic hip-hop oriented sound of "Starburst 7". But
anybody who knows his music better will see this as a logical extension of
many of his previous releases, all of which rely heavily on Beau's hip-hop
past. This single also serves notice of his intention not to be
pigeon-holed by the press or to be held hostage by the success of his
"Texturology" series. It's a taste of what we can expect to come in his
forthcoming album, "Sculptured" at the end of October, which features Lida
Husik in a reworking of "Woven Textures" (see "Texturology"), a hip-hop
track called "Toxicity", and a further extension of hip-hop, the spoken
word over a beat, poetry over noise, in "The Kiling Fields". That aside,
this single is just plain and simply brilliant; it's the kind of tune that
you hear once, and find yourself humming at in the bath 2 days later.
Highly recommended.
