Ok, i've had loads of questions from mac users about mpeg on their platform. Unfortunately, after searching the net everywhere i could think of that is even vaguely related to digital audio and mac or mpeg or audio compression, i haven't found any executable that encodes mpeg on the mac, nor adpcm wav. That is of course freeware/shareware. I dont really get it i'll tell you, as the sources have been available for so long... Isn't there a Mac owner who has a compiler? (i do have a mac, but only an old lightspeed C compiler). So, for now there seem to be only Unix, PC and Amiga versions available on the net... I'm putting together a good www page about info/source/whatever on audio compression, and i'll announce it as soon as it is up. If you cant wait get the MPEG FAQ on comp.dsp (or on rtfm.mit.edu). [snip] I found an MPEG utility for the Mac called Sparkle. I have two versions of it: Sparkle16 and Sparkle202. I have not been able to get it to work, mostly because I only had a couple of MPEG clips at the time and they may have been corrupted. Since then I forgot I even had it until I saw this message. I don't remember where I found it, but it was from an FTP site... I bet archie could find it quickly. Hope that helps, JT

Special note about Sparkle: you'll need to have the Thread Manager system extension in place before Sparkle will work... I think it is available from the Apple ftp site... Regards, mark

Yes, and it's useful to have in any case. It was on ftp.apple.com. It used to come with VoodooMonkey, a cool debugger which latched on to running preemptive threads and such. ObSparkle: it is available from the NCSA site, as one of Mosaic's friends. It is an MPEG player, haven't had much use for it though since existing quicktime stuff on the net is much higher quality than most mpeg movies I've seen. -H- ObIDM: turned on the tube this morning to catch the traffic report and saw the Milpitas high school cheerleaders doing a routine to Moby. OK, so it has nothing to do with IDM. Sorry!
