Hello everybody! Thought i'd let you know about some records i've been listening to recently: - DJ Shadow / DJ Krush - Lost And Found / Kemuri - Mo' Wax - Public Energy - Slumber / velocity - Probe - Ken Ishii - Reference To Difference - Sublime - Digable Planets - 9th Wonder - Pendulum - David Caron - EP - Eevo Lute Muzique DJ Shadow / DJ Krush - Lost And Found (S.F.L.) / Kemuri Mo' Wax MW 024 Yo! Trip hop, or abstract musical science according to the sleeve. The DJ Shadow track starts with some crazy scratching. Then there'a a beat. A slamming beat sampled from U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and cut up a bit. Mad stuff this. U2 have never been so funky before probably. Do i also hear some gee-tar in the distance? Very groovy. The DJ Krush track has a more straight hip hop beat. Seriously groovy this one and some great scratching too. More gee-tars as well. Mo' Wax proves again it's one of the most interesting labels of the moment. The DJ Shadow track is from the forthcoming Mo' Wax compilation 'Headz' and the DJ Krush one from Krush' forthcoming long playa 'Strictly Turtablized'. Mmmmm.... Public Energy - Slumber / Velocity Probe PRO21 Speedy Jochem Paap as his speedier alter ego Public Energy again. Velocity is a nice trancey thumper, but a bit too standard perhaps. I hear a 303, but it's not acid. Slumber on the other hand (side) is different. A bit scary this one, very (dark) atmospheric. Is it hardcore? Intelligent hardcore perhaps.. It sounds a bit like a very long intro, but that's maybe 'cos there's no snare in this track. It's very well built up. Nice one this... Ken Ishii - Reference To Difference Sublime Srcd.001 - Into The Inside - Fading Sky - Non Essentia - Finite Time - Interjection - Scene One Kinda strange this album hasn't been reviewed before on idm as it's already a few months old now and also very very good. Much more interesting than anything the Aphex one, or most other people, did lately. Ken boldly goes where no man has been before. If you thought his record on +8 was strange, listen to this. It's nice to see Ken's music is still progressing. It may all be weird and unconventional, but i still think it's very listenable. Mr. Ishii really knows how to program a synth!! Album of the year so far (also because Spanners will be released _next_ year ;) *thanx to Noguchi Tomonori Digable Planets - 9th Wonder Pendulum Y-58159 Rap on idm? Yes, why not. This record is very danceable as well as very intelligent. Some very creative beat programming on this track. It has an old school hip hop feel and a pretty fun(n)(k)y bass. Shame this record only has the same track on it in five different versions. Still some nice laid back stuff. (that beat, that *beat*!).... David Caron - EP Eevo Lute Muzique EEVO 010 - Dawn - A Quiet Passing - Mercy, No Mercy - Fantasy On A Fantasy On A ... Who the hell is David Caron? I really don't know. I only know that this (already a few months old) record is really nice. Cool laid back stuff with a very jazzy feel. There's only one coffeetable jazz track on it (Passing) but the rest is very good. Nice programming, especially those rhythms. The winner on this record must be Fantasy, i just love that double-bass! Groove on......... (Has Eevo already entered the idm building?) Well, that's it for now! Cheers, Hans -- +----------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | veneman@tv99ad.xs4all.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +----------------------------+
