I'll second that. I do read the music press, but not "Melody Maker." I have to read to keep up with the latest releases because there isn't a decent record store within spitting distance, and as a result I end up mail-ordering about 75% of my purchases. For me, few activities are as pleasurable as digging through the import bins, in search of the latest and greatest. But now that I live in a city without a decent import record store, I'm having to placate myself with what's released domestically and available at the local Tower. Flipping through the often empty Tower bins just ain't no fun. While there's more floating to the top -- Instinct, Moonshine, Astralwerks are all doing a great job at bringing import stuff to US record buyers -- the undercurrent remains just as strong, if not growing. I like compilations, especially when the proceeds go to such a great cause as the Bosnian refugees -- and I'll surely try to get my hands on a copy, not only for the music but also to show support. But in general, I'm staring to not like compilations. Sure, they provide an avenue for exposure of new bands, and some collect previously unreleased material. But the flood of comps is starting to make me feel a bit drowned. What I wish is that the record companies would back up the artists featured on comps, by releasing their full-lengths. I guess it's starting to happen, what with Aphex Twin, Irresistible Force, Orb, Orbital, some of the Artificial Intelligence series artists paving the way for domestic release of their material, and the public being rather receptive to such music. Sorry for rambling. I guess my point is that there is just too much good music coming out nowadays, which makes me appreciate this mailing list all the more.
