Grabbed this from alt.rave: Article 23344 of alt.rave: From: resonate@netcom.com (analog resonate) Subject: APHEX TWIN SET WAS FROM DAT!? Here it is- my observations from the APHEX TWIN show in SF on the NASA tour. 1) Richard James wasn't moving very much during his set. The amount of sounds he was producing would require lots of control over the equipment. He seemed hovered over only a Studio 440 SMPTE reader/sequencer. 2) His studio material soudned exactly like the live stuff with a few extra sounds added. 3) I bought Selected Ambient Work II and two of the trax on it were IDENTICAL to his live ones- note for note, beat for beat. 4) Finally I asked someone who had been working at the show and they said "yeah- i was working on stage when he started. He put a DAT in a player and off it went." Here are my conclusions: 1) He used a time-code DAT- a DAT tape with a stripe of SMPTE time code on it. His Studio 440 read the SMPTE time code and triggered some additional sounds adding a little to the set. 2) I'm not really upset about not seeing a live performance. I know that when my electronic music band performs it takes 3 people who have been rehearsing for YEARS to make a cohesive set on all electronic analog equipment. 3) The only reason I analyze his set like this is becase I am a eternal student of electronic music. I was really blown away by the idea that one person can control that many sounds from so few gear without moving around to control it at all. At least it doesn't seem that I'm crazy- in order to make that much sound you'd need about 3 people with lots of percussion and synth modules all clocked together to generate a set like that. Its a shame that he had to resort to a DAT show. -- ________________________________________________________________________________ sound is the sum of all ingredients that are used in its creation (((((((((((resonate))))))))))) ________________________________________________________________________________ _______ (__,-, \ / /\ \ f l u i d <finger me for PGP key> /,_) \ \ (/ \\ brit@chopin.udel.edu :65 FD F9 9F F2 23 F8 CF: \) flu'id (floo'-) :80 9C 11 AA 9F 92 0D 27:
