When I feel it getting too 'meta', I like to peel back a few layers and deal with the references - i.e., go retro for a few spins. And after all, the layers were being stacked way before any of us were born; I think it's just the compression and speed of them these days that amounts to the sameness we find tedious. It's a bit hard when it comes to an artist that seems to jump the line between 'style' and 'disappearing up one's own arse' to a set of listeners. In that case, it just doesn't help to skip back to, say, the first three Roxy Music records. The former will still sound stale when you come back. Funny how those 3 Roxys always sound vital every time I return, though (after the third, Ferry seems to fall prey to his legacy). None of this should be taken as commentary on BoC in particular; I haven't downloaded it. :-) jeff np : Roxy Music: For Your Pleasure (title track, resplendant with Enossified piano) -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Alan Lockett <Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk>
