This may not be an IDM-related show, but it is very much relevant for anyone interested in music history and great music in general. We hope that you will be able to join us for this rare performance from Detroit/L.A. jazz legend, PHIL RANELIN. This will be his first Chicago performance in over 15 years! === Sun.20.NOVEMEMBER.2005 / CHICAGO, IL @ The Empty Bottle / 1035 N. Western Ave. 21+ / $20 / 7p (early!) http://emptybottle.com (for more info + tix) A special evening of jazz & soulful music presented by EMPTY BOTTLE Jazz Series, SILVERWRAPPER Promotions and HEFTY Records... -PHIL RANELIN & TRIBE RENAISSANCE [HEFTY, TRIBE labels] -NICOLE MITCHELL'S BLACK EARTH ENSEMBLE [member of David Boykin Band, AACM - Dreamtime, Thrill Jockey labels] -DJ SUPREME COURT [Sheer Magic, Reckless Records] === Hefty Records, Empty Bottle and Silver Wrapper Promotions are proud to welcome celebrated jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin to Chicago after a fifteen-year absence. Returning to the stage for one night only, Ranelin and his band, Tribe Renaissance, will play two sets alongside DJ Supreme Court (Sheer Magic Crew, Reckless Records, Soul Night monthly @ Danny?s) and Nicole Mitchell?s Black Earth Ensemble (Dreamtime, Thrill Jockey). Having collaborated with such contemporaries as Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery early on in his career, Ranelin co-founded Detroit?s Tribe collective (along with fellow conspirators: Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, amongst others), a highly influential organization that championed sociopolitical activism and musicianship within the Detroit community. The spirit of Tribe manifested itself most strongly in two of Ranelin?s releases; The Time Is Now! (1974) and Vibes From The Tribe (1976) both imparted a sense of urgency, idealistic rebellion, and a longing for peace and unity that could only be conveyed through a bass trombone. Reissued in 2001 by Hefty Records, these albums have gone on to a new audience of listeners. Later that year, Hefty also released a fantastic remix project, Phil Ranelin: Remixes (2001), which saw the reissues being reinterpreted by contemporary admirers of Ranelin?s legacy. Remix contributions came from underground greats like Morgan Geist (Metro Area), Prefuse 73, El-P, Kirk DeGiorgio, Jan Jelinek, Telefon Tel Aviv, Slicker, amongst others. Learn more about PHIL RANELIN: http://www.ranelin.com === PRESS QUOTES FOR PHIL RANELIN: Back in the 70s trombonist Phil Ranelin was a key figure in Detroit's Tribe--a diverse collective, akin to the AACM and Saint Louis's Black Artist Guild, that operated as a band, record label, and magazine publisher. Recent reissues on the British label Soul Jazz and Chicago's Hefty Records have cast new light on Tribe's music, a freewheeling mix of postbop and funk that takes its cues from Miles Davis's early electric period as well as the controlled free jazz of the AACM. -Peter Margasak, Music Critic, CHICAGO READER http://www.chicagoreader.com/listings/static/treatment.html#PHIL An icon since the ?70s, this legendary African-American jazz trombonist returns to Chicago after a 15-year wait; expect the place to be packed. -Matthew Lurie, Music Critic, TIMEOUT CHICAGO === PHIL RANELIN'S Band Information: Phil Ranelin -- trombone Zane Musa -- saxophone Tigran Hamasyan -- piano Ryan Cross -- bass Lorca Hart -- trap drums Don Littleton -- congas & percussion === NICOLE MITCHELL Band Information: Nicole Mitchell -- flute David Boykin -- sax Josh Abrams -- bass Marcus Evans -- drums === http://www.emptybottle.com http://www.silverwrapper.com http://www.heftyrecords.com http://www.ranelin.com http://www.nicolemitchell.com http://www.nicolemitchell.com/dreamtime.htm _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
