My personal recommendation in this department would be to listen to whatever James B has to say - he's an absolute nut about headphones - that's an understatement even - and can provide very good recommendations. I've purchased 2 pairs of headphones over the years based on his recommendations - but only after spending several hours on IM chatting about my very specific needs - price, performance, sound, genre, comfort, open vs. closed, sound isolation, etc. I've also purchased a couple headphone amplifiers based on his recommendations. I'm pretty obsessive about music so quality of sound is integral to the experience for me. So, skip to the cheat sheet - for work I purchased a pair of BeyerDynamic DT 250's. The sound is deep and rich and completely inaudible to the outside world (i.e. your coworkers). To compliment these I purchased a mini amp from fixup.net. That was 2 years ago. Recently I decided to purchased some headphones for home and again consulted James here. In the end I decided on the Sennheiser HD580's due to their (relative) affordability and coupled them with a G&W amp from Japan. In both cases I have been absolutely and completely satisfied with the sound, quality and comfort - especially with the BeyerDynamics which can be worn for hours on end at the office. So yeah, this post is partially a heads up and thanks to James and partially the end result of my purchases and recommendations. The website mentioned: www.headfi.org is the absolute nutters resource for all things headphone related so definitely check it out.
