Hi, .Idm i guess means 'intelligent dance music' but alot of classic idm has beatless and what i would call ambient tracks.Ambient for me is beatless like the ambience in nature , in the dictionary it is quoted as ' surrounding and on all sides ' .The term i think eno used first ? i think he used this due to his experiments with phase tricks and stuff and his stereo system that used 3 speakers , a third behind wired into just the positives on his system ? Ambient music comes in many guises and infact makes you realise how impossible it is to label music which can be quite style-less and formless .I consider ambient music pretty much beatless and ambient music with beats ' downtempo '.Idm i tend to think of as electronic music with predominant beats but a mood which people like plaid , autechra and bola etc captured which can be haunting and sublime and which i first heard on the early warp stuff and aphex twins first ambient works one . All idm is ambeint though in a sense and in relation to the dictionary as it is still music which grabs and immerses you . . . i feel like a dog chasing my tale. I tend to not think of music as one or the other these days and when i do its in relation to labels who definately work in one of a number of scenes .There are idm labels selling in the idm scene and chilled labels selling in a totally different scene .There is cross pollination though:) jachin
