I had a good time... and was surrounded by good friends, some of whom I hadn't seen for years. I know a lot of folks that flew in from out of town to catch the show. For a large space it felt strangely intimate - and up near the front, left side of the stage (in the bass trap) there was a large contingent of midwest folks - including a handful of grizzled old schoolers... and that's where I spent the whole night... being throttled by the bass. As far as I'm aware this was the first public performance using a lot of new equipment, and from my understanding of things the equipment was designed to allow absolute control over everything... which is great, but it's probably pretty damn overwhelming, too. Which might explain my impression that things were a bit on the conservative side. Hawtin's set at last year's Mutek seemed a lot more experimental, but they're hard to compare - last year I was expecting something along the lines of DE909 material and this year had so much hype attached to it that it's almost impossible to ignore the anticipation. There were some technical glitches, but there always are... on the whole a nice array of material was presented and I think that over the next while, after the feeling out process is over, we're likely to see and hear things that we can't imagine yet... Perhaps the Plastikman performances stopped because there really wasn't anything that could top the spectacle and experience of the lengendary Fuk shows. Perhaps this new gear means new possibilities and perhaps we'll soon be seeing and hearing things we've never imagined. One can only hope. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam?
