actually, miles is credited as starting the fusion thing with 'bitches brew'
(largely as a result of his fascination/brief friendship with hendrix). and -
again demonstrating the limitations of musical categories - a lot of "fusion"
was exactly that - with musicians drawing from jazz, classical, rock and
anything else. in fact, if "prog rock" describes music that fuses rock's timbres
and instruments with classical structures, then a lot of fusion (david
sancious, jan hammer, lifetime, al dimeola ,chick corea jean-luc ponty) was
actually prog. The only distinction was that it was executed by people with
sigificantly more technique than your average prog rocker.
