actually, miles is credited as starting the fusion thing with 'bitches brew' (largely as a result of his fascination/brief friendship with hendrix). and - again demonstrating the limitations of musical categories - a lot of "fusion" was exactly that - with musicians drawing from jazz, classical, rock and anything else. in fact, if "prog rock" describes music that fuses rock's timbres and instruments with classical structures, then a lot of fusion (david sancious, jan hammer, lifetime, al dimeola ,chick corea jean-luc ponty) was actually prog. The only distinction was that it was executed by people with sigificantly more technique than your average prog rocker. t
