::: welcome & news update
we've been rather quiet of late on the old email front so it's about time
for a bumper update from emoticon towers! you may or may not have noticed
that we've got a few new releases out at the moment on both emoticon and
it's tougher brother headspace, with plenty more good stuff coming up, so
read on to find out more...
after a summer break we started our series of releases from the artists
featured on june's 'headspace 2003 sampler' ep, kicking off with four
tracks from glasgow's rei loci. enthusiastic fans and reviewers were quick
to liken his style to derrick may, kenny larkin and juan atkins, which
should give you some idea of the quality. hot on his heels came an ep from
germany's rising techno hero arne weinberg, whose 'romantic machinery' is
warming many a cold heart this winter. next up after christmas is a solo
offering from derek carr, to be followed by fresh material from glasgow's
elijah (aka laurence hughes)...
meanwhile at emoticon we've been gearing up for the launch of our first
artist album. russ gabriel has donned his 'audio spectrum' hat and has
turned in eight lovingly-crafted tracks for your listening pleasure which,
together with the three tracks from his previous emoticon ep, form 'the
other side project volume one'. set for january release, the promo copies
we've leaked out are already causing a stir with gilles peterson and benji
b (both of whom have been dropping tracks on bbc radio), and positive
feedback continues to pour in thick and fast from headz in all corners of
the globe.
out now is a taster 12" featuring the massive album cut 'masonette' along
with yotoko's remix of 'aldeburgh', exclusive to this sampler ep. domu and
shifty have done us proud, coupling the moody strings abd retro analogues
of the original with a deep 4/4 groove for the dancefloor.
also released this week is the second ep from those men who take
perfectionism to new levels, otomi. after winning over everyone from carl
craig to chateau flight with last year's debut 12", their warm, spacious,
downbeat techno sound continues to evolve in the form of 'pakt' and 'raum'.
look out for a third installment next year.
so what else is new? well, emoticon's boss tom churchill has been keeping
busy on the dj front in glasgow, carrying the torch for traxx events at the
arches, the soundhaus and the unit, not to mention second nature with andy
pirie and spatial with laurence hughes every month - and he's off to
australia at the end of november to bring some of the emoticon vibe to
perth and melbourne. he also found time this summer to remix sidewinder's
'open source' for glasgow's excellent fenetik label, and is hard at work on
new music for a few other people.
you can now buy most of the emoticon back catalogue on sonomu.net, plus of
course straight from the source at rushhour.nl and at quality record stores
throughout the globe. thanks for your continued support - we all know times
are getting hard for our industry but as long as the quality music is being
made we'll strive to keep putting it in your hands...
