converting mp3s back to audio CD forrmat (16bit PCM stereo) will not destroy more quality. however, MiniDisks are not audio CDs, they use a compression similar to MP3. converting between these formats looses some more quality because the encoded files can not be transcoded (AFAIK) but have to decoded and re-encoded. (even if transcoding is possible some quality will most likely be lost in the process). about converting MP3s back to 'CD' format: if the decoder used is of recent release date (lets say in the last two years) you should be on save side. AFAIK Nero uses the Fraunhofer decoder as does SoundForge. your comparison to digital imaging is correct, mp3 compression can very roughly be compared to the JPG compression: the sampled information is converted into another domain (frequency domain for MP3, cosine domain (if that the right word) for JPG) then the information is reduced (quantized, this is where the quality is lost) and entropy encoded/compressed (something like ZIP or RAR, no information is lost here). the way the information is reduced (quantized) decides about the loss of quality and for which purpose the format is suitable. I hope that was not too boring :)
