According to the labels and artists, you just wouldn't get to hear them. Another issue clouding this wonderfully black/white debate is the idea of out-of-print (OOP) releases. BOC Maxima was never released in record stores, but there are a few tapes out there. The MP3's are somewhat available. There's no other way of getting the music, and there's no talk whatsoever of re-releasing the album. Now, obviously, consumers have no "right" to the music, but if an album only exists on the used market OR as MP3, and the label refuses to do a repress, fans and labels should expect to see dupes available (and sold/given as dupes, no less) as there is a demand. Twoism was recently repressed, despite most people who cared about it having already heard the mp3's. There's no way of knowing if it affected sales or not, and warp's not releasing any numbers, but up until that point the ONLY way to hear that release was to buy a $300 piece o' wax from someone used or download the mp3's. Neither solution helped the label nor the artist. ironically, many of those OOP records still get very high prices on eBay despite being widely available as MP3. And there's still demand for repressing the record even after hearing the mp3's. It could be argued that people want it MORE after hearing what's on it. Of course, the opposite could be true, too. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
