Well -- I think the actual origins of rap lay back in West Africa,
traveling musician/singers carrying news and royal announcements, social
commentary, etc. Later lines of descent visible in calypso, reggae
['toasting'], blues, and hiphop.
I'm not sure where this leaves Arlo Guthrie!
