I've just come back from Ocean in Hackney where Coldcut
and about ten VJ crews have got computers and little work
areas set up with all kinds of software and playthings
people were checking out. They got sponsored by NESTA
to put on a VJ workshop and VJ v DJ laptop v. live jam.
Really good because VJ's were
milling around and there's enough chance to get to
talk to guys about how they do it.
As I was leaving the workshops were beginning,
including a 4pm panel discussion entitled "Hang the VJ?"
discussing copyright for vjs and how vjs perform given
the ownership of images. Matt Black (Coldcut) and Carles
Kriel Radio ! VJ and contemporary visual artist are on the
panel which includes someone from the Hypermedia Research
Centre @ University of Westminster..
I'm back up there later, cause I checked out the
room for the VJ v. DJ jam. I havent seen so many laptops
lined in a row .... ever. There musta been about 20
laptops set up on stage with live drum kit a huge screen
over the laptops (guess they're gonna project in front
of themselves in the dark)... I think some of the best
vj's in London are up to the challenge.
even if yr a sunday nite 24 addict, coldcut are on @ 10pm
so it looks like a lotta cool stuff yet to come.
the only miserable thing is i decided to drive up there
from southwest london and crosstown traffic is worse
than jimi hendrix.
