Metric Halo hs released a firewire device called the Mobile I/O. Same amount of inputs and outputs, but it features better mic preamps, full metering, DSP Processing, and is built better than the 828. I love my 828, but when I start doing some serious traveling, I'll probably move up to the MI/O. MOTU is releasing a new firewire device next month to compete with the MI/O. Oh yeah, both the MI/O and the new MOTU unit cost about twice as much as the 828...

These are nice. 2 ins/outs + SPDIF. There are some driver issues that create nasty clicks when using the card with ProTools or Digital Performer, so you have to be careful. There were some patches released in the middle of 2001 that fix these problems. Digidesign is releasing a small USB device to be used with ProTools Free in the next few months. Might be worth checking out....I just wish they'd get of their ass and release a firewire device!
