But that's not to detract from the fact that it's really quite good! I
consider it really "dark" scary electro (unlike Kraftwerk); it's not "poppy,"
it's "deep"... but some people just find it "gimmicky"... I guess one man's
"kitsch" is another man's "shtick." Or "something."

Now that shit's cheesy.
My favorite Rother track might be "Sex with Machines" on Kanzleramt. It's
neither excessively Kraftwerkian nor excessively cheesy.
Besides, the whole electro genre is a total rip on Kraftwerk. Cut the man
some slack.
