People will tell you that Lali Puna is heavily influenced by
Stereolab. This is somewhat true, but Lali Puna, at least with Scary
World Theory, have their own style. While the vocals are very
reminiscent of the sounds of Stereolab, the underlying music is
pretty original. It's quite pretty, but I think it ultimately lacks
the intricacies that I enjoy so much. To be honest, there are quite a
few albums I would get before Lali Puna. I would, however, make sure
that you eventually picked it up. It has enough going for it to be
worthwhile.
But then again, you said that you liked Men With Boxes, which I think
is hideously boring. Even the funkstorung track is bad, which is
rare. There are one or two good tracks, but all in all, MWB is one of
the biggest letdowns this year for me.
Also, Christian Kleine's album on Centre City Offices has been out
for a little bit. I find it nowhere near as good as the Kickboard
Girl E.P. Kleine's solo effort is rather bland, but not without
merit. Just not one of the best things this year.
I'm trying to get up the energy to write reviews of the stuff I have
picked up this year.. but I don't know whether or not it would even
be worth it. =)
Stuff in heavy rotation:
A Silver Mt. Zion - that new album whose name I cant recall at the
moment because it's not on the cd and I dont feel like looking it up
on the internet
Prefuse73 - vocal studies and uprock narratives
Abfahrt Hinwil - logatech and programm 2
there is always more stuff i am digging, but those are neccessary
purchases this year, for sure.
take care.
