I've picked up select recent releases on Mille Plateaux/Force Inc/etc.... so here are some impressions. Alva noto "Transform" (Mille Plateaux) This is an essential record for anyone who's into the more rhythmic yet abstract side of the microsound/glitch stuff. It's more rhythmic than his last one on MP ("Prototypes") but no less accomplished. This is the most accessible thing I've heard from Carsten Nicolai, a far cry from the 3"CD he completed for the recent Raster "(o)acis" compilation ;-) Geoff White "Questions and Comments" (Force Inc) This release, while certainly a neat and tidy collection of tracks, doesn't do a whole lot for me. There's little to complain about here, because it's got all the makings of a good deep techno/techhouse recording, but for some reason it never seems to equal more than the sum of its parts for me. It's certainly not bad, but a little stiff perhaps. Jetone "Ultramarin" (Force Inc) This release from Tim Hecker is really great stuff. Deep, pulsating tracks, full of atmospherics and reverb... He's not afraid to deviate from the formula either, with some more abstract moments too. I haven't yet heard the Dub Taylor but plan on picking it up... and I've decided to refrain from any of the newer Terre Thaemlitz releases, as the Rubato series does little for me. The Perlon comp, as mentioned below, is pretty good, although it's not quite what I was expecting based on the Markus Nikolai release I picked up. (Not having a turntable, I'm limited to what little Perlon offers on CD) Other techhouse releases of note: Golden Boy with Miss Kitten -- perhaps the ideal balance of hi-nrg cliches, dancefloor tendencies and tech-house sounds rolled into one short album, with vocals courtesy of Miss Kitten (of "Frank Sinatra" fame)... also the Ware Records "Warenkorb #3" disc which highlights several artists on the label through exclusive tracks (M.Schaffhauser, I.Schmidt, Decomposed Subsonic, etc). How is the "Famous When Dead" compilation on Playhouse? I'm not familiar with much of their roster... any descriptions of the compilation or Playhouse artists are appreciated in advance. Any reviews of the new Steve Bug Cocoon compilation? +------------------------------------+ m.mercer :: systm audio-visual communicator http://www.matthewmercer.com mmercer@kent.edu :: vletrmx@hotmail.com
