there have been so many...so many turned out to be one night
stands...short and random mornings after:
"white album" beatles : i was twelve...the weary bitterness of this
album...pop mixed with crap. I didn't understand why it sounded new
at the time. the sound of the sixties dying.
"switched on bach" walter carlos : at the time all those sounds were
astonishing. then I learned how quickly synth sounds get old.
"switched on bach" is still engagingly quirky, but seems like some
old gizmo from the attic.
"key" meredith monk : found this at the library when i was 14 or so.
i was appalled then excited by this early meredith monk record. it
was purposely lo-fi, featured alarmingly repetitious electronic
organ, as well as monk's eccentric baby-woman vocalizing. it was my
first brush with the minimalists working in Soho in the early 70's,
and i knew i was breathing the air of a different planet.
