as a couple of other people have pointed out, Sharon's
a synaesthete. Scriabin was too, as was Kandinsky,
hence his hooking up with composers a lot. what
happens (as far as i can remember) is that sensory
impulses crossfire across the brain, triggering
responses in the visual cortex from auditory stimuli
and vice versa (or something like that). Sharon's
synaesthesia is the most common type, but taste and
smell can get involved too and in any combination. a
couple of years ago there was a horizon programme on
the good old BBC which explored synaesthesia and dealt
with some pretty severe cases - a chronic sufferer who
lived in the warwickshire countryside was taken to
central london. she described the different shapes she
saw, their colours and texture, and was pretty much
unable to function because of the information
overload. a great book to pick up on the subject is
Luria's 'Mind of a Mnemonist' which deals with a bloke
who had a photographic memory. he could memorise huge
sheets of abstract numbers and nonsense words, which
he did through synaesthesia; words and numbers
recalled particular shapes or characters (a 4 was an
old man with a stick, to take one of the more literal
examples). to get the order, he would place these
objects or characters along a street, his recall being
a mental trip along it. cheaper than hallucinogens
maybe, but you can't turn it off...
my guess is that those people who are really into
music that's main feature is texture are probably all
a bit synaesthetic in that probably vague images are
thrown up by it. i think that's the case for me
anyhow.
stuff that makes me go 'aah' (this week anyhow)
miles davis - 'he loved him madly'
brian eno - 'events in dense fog'
squarepusher - 'a journey to reedham'
kraftwerk - 'autobahn'
and does anyone know anything about sketch? norwegian
duo, one album on R&S called 'reasons to sway' - one
of the finest ambient records i've heard - deep, very
bubbly stuff. have they done anything else ?
cheers
peter
