hello all: i'm with helix and donna on this one, and love Arovane. If you like Ae's "Inncubala", "Amber", and BOC, i dont see why you wouldnt like arovane. . . all cut from the same cloth in my book but one's man's pleasure is another man's poison as they say . . . His first cd "Atol Scrap" is very autechre sounding and some would even call it derivative, but then again Ae has had such a powerful influence on modern electronica, we could all make lengthy lists of 2nd generation autechre artists. BOC's "music has the right . . ." was also chided as being too Ae sounding when it first came out but it looks like we have all gotten over that. Arovane's "Tides" is simply lovely. Passionate, warm melodies, a little melancholy, and fat hip hop style beats. Michael, if you're friend digs DJ Krush (one of my faves as well), go with "Tides". I could definitely see mixing the two together. Both sparse with a definite vibe to em, and similar laid back tempos but dont expect any scratchin. Also, in the classic hip hop vein: two great labels to check out are: ninjatune (www.ninjatune.net) and old mo wax (http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~esvtk/mowax/). a veritable wealth of material here so bring your checkbook. whether or not you can score the instrumental soundtrack to "ghost dog", rent the flick. "black mask" is also a great flick to rent with a hip hop soundtrack. hopefully, "dark days" (scored by dj shadow) will be on video soon as well. this "certain kind of music that hasn't been very clearly pigeon-holed" has been called by many names: trip hop, acid jazz, hip hop avant guard, downtempo, hip tech and now there's bip hop (www.bip-hop.com). idm is an appropriate box as well for much of this music as it all depends on how you define your terms. in the end, these genres are somewhat meaningless as they tend to separate people instead of bringin em together . . . but whatever you want to call this genre, "this" is the arena where new sounds are forged; the space where styles/genres overlap and artists take chances, free from trying to please "one" kind of listener. ciao, Ken On Wed, 20 Jun 2001, Helix Tradesman wrote:
