vitaminic is currently one of the majors' answers to the napster scare. it is quite an established firm now, which has been floating on the technology market enough to be considered solid and not likely to go bust or anything in the near future, especially now that is has major support. the "club" part is of course an appetizer for the more commercial part of the site, which carries very mainstream stuff but also some obscure-ish stuff that usually dates from the days when vitaminic used to be some sort of mp3.com. the deal now is that most new releases from major or major-distributed labels (eg. sony and its sublabels, or indies distributed by sony) find and exclusive internet outlet through vitaminic, or at least that is contained in most of the new distribution contracts (that's how vitaminic managed to attract new fresh capital, in fact: by showing what "good friends" it has around the music industry). this means you can expect many more major releases to pop up eventually on their catalogue in the future and you'll be able to buy all of them them in mp3 format. the rest of the stuff that doesn't sound familiar by its name is currently lots of italian stuff, because vitaminic is originally an italian firm that has gone global in the last year or so, and it keeps all its "assets" in the catalogue. i guess this will develop a bit in the future too, and the off-the-mainstream cata will become more international. right now it's cool if you're into irma stuff for instance, but you won't find many off-the-mainstream international idm acts in it at the moment. so, my advice would be to, ahem, hang on a while (if you're into idm, mainly) because the price of the service still seems a bit steep to me considering what they are offering (which is still a limited catalogue in my opinion, especially as far as electronica and idm is concerned). of course the catalogue is bound to become larger and larger thank to the new deals with majors and with some indies, but it's not the case now, and it probably won't be for quite a long time as far as non major-distributed indie labels are concerned. vitaminic also has its "direct sales" part (it's the main part, actually), where you can buy single tracks you are interested in, after listening to an excerpt. it's the "stage" part (as in http://stage.vitaminic.com). the club part seems to be some sort of appetizer for this, and also an experiment on "wholesale" of mp3 music. so, have a look at the "stage" part first, all the stuff on the club part is on the stage part, too, and maybe you might be better off in buying single tracks instead of a big chunk. now, i shouldn't be saying this because it might sound a bit biased, as it's the part where WE are hosted, he he he. we are at http://stage.vitaminic.com/table/ and it was organized by our current label, an italian indie called fridge. and we are not in the "club" part :-))) (ok, end of plug) ciao nd --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
