Oops, I think I was probably a little unclear. I was referring to
the people, rather than the music, when I was wondering about the
psytrance to IDM crossover. Sorry about that, I'm frequently a bit
unclear prior to my morning tea.
So then...
For the past couple of years my friends and I have been putting
together small gatherings in the pacific northwest. The general
theme is psytrance in the upbeat room and IDM in the mid beat
room.
Even though these two flavors have their obvious differences, it
seems that people in this area (Pacific NW) seem to really enjoy
the combination.
For quite some time I have wondered if this is a natural genre
crossover for people or if it happens to be mostly limited to the
Pacific NW for now.
Lately I have heard psytrance references in IDM circles and that
got me thinking about the possible connection again.
Oh yes and incidentally I agree with your artist recommendations,
and to add to it, if anyone is interested, the slower direction of
psytrance (I like to call it psytrambient) has the tendency to
depart a bit from the formulaic 4/4 beat and rely more on the
tweaky synth bits. Of course, the grand daddy of this is
Hallucinogen (Simon Posford) in his alter-ego, Shpongle. Not quite
IDM but definitely in the neighborhood.
