The Cex show was one of the most worthwhile trips to Detroit I've made in a long time! Cex added a personality to live electronic music that is almost unheard of. He was funny as hell, and it never got old. I really enjoyed all of his "inside" jokes about Reaktor and other programs. I didn't even realize how fun it was to make fun of music software! I think the highlight of his performance was when he took the entire audience outside to sing Pearl Jam's "Jeremy". I don't mind the fact than many IDM artists prefer to be faceless, but if that is the path they choose, I don't really see the incentive for a live performance. To compensate for the fact that I couldn't get near Autechre at the DEMF (way to big a crowd for a shorty like myself), I went home, put my cat in front of my laptop, and played Tri Repetae in the dark. It was surprisingly similar to the descriptions of Autechre shows I've read on this list. My cat would have been no substitute for Cex, though. I was surprised how many people snuck out during the Cex set, but I suppose it was sort of late for a Thursday night. I'm a bit sleepy at the office now, but I don't regret it a bit. If Cex comes to your town, by all means check it out. All the other musicians last night were excellent as well. I hope more glitch karaoke comes to Michigan soon!
