I hopped onto the email-your-gripe bandwagon and got a letter back from Carol Marvin which varied somewhat from those I saw posted on 313-l. She said she sensed that I wanted to know details (which, btw, wasn't the impetus of my email, but I did stress that I couldn't pronounce judgment as I DIDN'T know details) and didn't hesitate to mention that the "contracts...were hardly the issue...but was something the media had chosen to focus upon". While she didn't come right out and SAY the issue was creative differences, she certainly made it clear that it wasn't about Carl being late on contracts AND that the differences ran deeper than that. When I combine this with an interview she did on a local PBS DEMF special (I think it aired last Sunday via the Flint, MI.channel - WFUM ?) where she said that next year's DEMF would "build on the base already there...and expand on ...business opportunities...and making a much wider appeal to the whole 'Detroit party' community", I take it to mean that there's a stinking good chance that commerciality "on the whole" is what the DEMF may be headed toward in the future. While I will have to wait and see until next year when the jury comes in, I'm betting this is the case. And speaking of betting, *my* money is on Carl. Most of the corporations in general (with the exception of using bits here and there for commercials) don't have a great track record for making great 313 music or starting/supporting labels and formats which do. Carl Craig does. AND he seems to have somewhat of a clue as to the business end of things (DEMF 2000/ Planet E) in general. Somehow, siding with Carl doesn't seem so much of a bandwagonesque concept at all - even if I don't know all of the gory details. He's already earned the benefit of the doubt in my book. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
