I saw Sigur Ros at Coachella and again last night at
the Fillmore in SF.
First of all, they have a drummer, bass player,
keyboardist/ guitarist/ flute & pipe player, a 4 piece
string section, and a guitarist/ singer who plays his
guitar mostly with a violin bow. The singer's voice
is absolutely angelic. He has one of the most
beautiful and distinctive voices I've ever heard. His
voice combined with the incredible tones he can get
out of his bowed guitar are one of the most unique and
gorgeous things I have ever heard. I don't really
know how to describe the sound; you just have to hear
it for yourself.
The songs tend to be slow and melancholy at first and
then build in intensity until they climax. Ahem...
They are not unlike Mogwai in the way that they build
to grand peaks of sonic intensity. The result is
something incredible. I have bought Sigur Ros's album
and it doesn't come close to the beauty and intensity
of their live sets. If you get the chance, drop
everything and go see them.
