It's quite likely the latter. The mainstream singles market in Canada is very small, mainly because: 1) a lot of mainstream radio hits are never released as commercial singles in this country, so if you like the song and want to own it, you have to buy the album; and 2) when they *are* released, they tend to be quite expensive in relation to full-length albums - so why plunk down 6-8 bucks for a single when you can get the album for only a few bucks more? Therefore, singles with very few units sold can hit the charts pretty easily. And singles that are quite old can stay on the charts for a long time even if they only sell a dozen or so copies. For example, here are some odd looking entries on the latest sales charts for singles in Canada (taken from http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicCharts/SINGLES.html): #12: CLOSER - NINE INCH NAILS ( INTERSCOPE ) #20: FIXED - NINE INCH NAILS ( INTERSCOPE ) #24: GLORYTIMES - PORTISHEAD ( POLYGRAM ) [this one has been on the chart for 226 weeks!] #29: VOL. 2-PEEL SESSION AUTECHRE ( WRPR ) #37: IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE OUT IN - BOARDS OF CANADA ( WRPR ) #44: MY IRON LUNG - RADIOHEAD ( EMI ) So yeah, it's kind of cool that Warp stuff is hitting the mainstream sales charts in Canada. But it doesn't really mean much in the long run.
